I first heard this done live by Gamble Rogers. Yeah, that's going back a ways, but if you're here and listening, chances are you go back a ways, too. I remember standing there with my mouth hanging open; the song affected me that much. Steve Goodman's version, thought way back when I hadn't heard this one, couldn't be beat. I was wrong. This, without a doubt, is the best.

So beautiful and moving, what a gift for Dr. Linda Kinkel, and the rest of us. Thank you, Eric.

Hey Eric. Any idea why this video became so degraded? I turned a friend on to your version, but unfortunately it’s become unlistenable. Your version is better than Michael’s!

First time I've heard this by Tom. I first heard it by Reilly & Maloney in the 80s. Just finished "Face the Music" about Steve Goodman, several mentions of Tom inspired me to look this up. A fine song. BTW: anyone know who the dedication at the beginning is about?

Walked into my husband's office a few minutes ago and he had another rendition of this song up on KZbin. I remember hearing this on the old WNEW-FM in NYC years and years ago (back in the 1970s or 80s, before they became an "Adult Contemporary" station) -- but I don't know if it was the Steve Goodman version, this version, or someone else's. I do know that at some point in the more recent past I tracked down the lyrics online, because I always found it to be a beautiful (if incredibly sad) song.

one of the greatest songwriters ever - and this maybe his greatest most beautiful songs. My favorite song ever. Michael Smith lives in our hearts always.

We were very good acquaintances in Seattle In the late 70's/early 80's. One of the nicest people I've ever known. I was shocked when I learned of his death a few years back. He's really changed the arrangement of Delicate Balance here from the version I was used to.

Really nice cover, and you have a fantastic voice! So good to hear others performing Nez songs. Michael Nesmith doesn't get the recognition he deserves as a primo singer-songwriter!

I first heard this song, and another called “Car” done by the great autoharp player, Bryan Bowers back in the 80’s. Great musicians, both. And two great songs, as well.

That was strong. Beautiful voice Mr Kinkle- and an emotional rendition of this chestnut by the late, great Michael Peter Smith.

Thank you very much Stonehands, my late sister was a doctor in Ornithology, she passed away in 2006 from complications of MS. I used end my concerts by paying homage to her with this song.

I miss him too. We did a duo for a short time in the 90s. We drove accross the country and made terrible time. Stopping here for pie and coffee, there to shoot a few hoops at a high school. The boy knew how to live. I've just added a video of Tom and I singing a John Prine song together on my channel. Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/laOboYCGl9iSl8U.
