Why does knowing the truth involve staying in Wonderland, which by definition means being detached from reality?

The most salient point of this movie/series is that it points out the fact that most people would rather bury their heads in the sand than encounter painful truths. The tiny proportion of people whose minds are able to be freed from the matrix because of how much they value truth and free will is probably a good approximation for that percentage of people in real life. Without the minority of red pill people, we would be destined for extinction.
