I am confused as to what is a basic curve and what is an s curve. It looked like you just did curves layers. I got it now
@peculiargalexy Жыл бұрын
Yup! They are just curve manipulations. When I was first taught, that’s how the person who taught me called them. The S curve looks like an S and can manipulate the contrast of the image and tone up or down. The basic curve is just an arch that only manipulates overall brightness whereas the S curve has two or more points of manipulation! If I were to re-make the videos I’d probably just call them both a curves adjustment and put it in one video :)

Hi! thanks for sharing this. I see you didn't scale the data with asinh, and then recover the information in Ps. Are there any differences/advantages with this method? Personally I try to get most of the information in FITS Liberator and then just worry about colourizing in PS.
@peculiargalexy2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by recover it in PS? I did do the asinh scaling, but I am not sure what recovering it in PS means. I am sadly not too proficient in FITS Liberator and only just learned about power stretches. But I’d love to know more!
@bynlb2 жыл бұрын
@@peculiargalexy I'm sorry, that was a poor choice of words. What I meant by recover was to "lift up" the details later in photoshop.
@peculiargalexy2 жыл бұрын
@@bynlb Hmm well usually I make the asnih scale in FITS Liberator and then adjust the levels and curves to brighten the data in Photoshop. I try to find a balance between brightening the object and keeping the background from getting too bright. I have been a lot more conservative in my approach with bringing out details lately, so perhaps it doesn't look like I did much, but I always follow those steps!
@bynlb2 жыл бұрын
@@peculiargalexy I see. I usually do the scaling in Fits Liberator too taking care of not brighten up the shadows, but sometimes I end up with defects and noise in Photoshop. I haven't found that balance yet. Some files are a real struggle. Do you know how to use the other files that are contained in the fits files? I read somewhere that they're meant to be used to calibrate.
@peculiargalexy2 жыл бұрын
@@bynlb Yea, FITS Liberator is tricky without anyone to teach. I found a video on it years after I first discovered how to use it and now I'm curious to try out power stretches, to see how much those can help. I have seen the other files with the FITS ones, but I am not experienced enough to use them. I'm actually learning Python to see if I can learn how to do more advanced things with these files that might help with image processing. I feel that some files are so hard to work with and require advanced skills. I do have a NASA contact that I bug with questions from time to time, but a lot of my issues come with image alignment and it's so tricky to do- especially manually. Would you be interested in email or Discord chat? I'd love to work on ways of image processing techniques and talk more about it and see if we can figure things out!

Could you post a video on how to manually align the images? I do not have access to pixinsight but most of the released images are different sizes.
@peculiargalexy2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately manually aligning in PS is very difficult which is why I ended up buying PixInsight. You can try using the free transform tool. Change the layer you want to align to a lower opacity and align the images using bright stars. You can try PixInsight for free for 45 days ( pixinsight.com/trial/index.html ) but unless someone else can chime in, I haven’t been able to figure out any other way to do it sadly.

@@peculiargalexy I just got the trial version and my problem now is trying to figure out how to align miri and nircam images together. ive tried star alignment and dynamic alignment, but it's still difficult for NGC 628 :(.
@peculiargalexy2 жыл бұрын
@@anjelicaalfonso3833 Yea, sometimes it is hard to do in PixInsight. Often I will upload all images together and see if it can align at least one. Then I take the one it aligned and make it my new reference image. If it won't align any, then I would either use NIRCAM or MIRI only. There is another feature that might work called DynamicAlignment. I do not have experience with it, but Google might help! Aligning images is one thing I haven't quite figured out yet. If you do figure it out, let me know!
@bynlb2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I know its been 4 months, but if you havent come across a solution, I can tell you what I do. I choose a frame that I'm confortable with and use it as a reference. Then put the problematic one, over the reference. I apply a level layer and literally force the contrast to get a black and white image with hard marings around objects, 50% oppacity and start the alignment using skew and free transform options. It takes a while and sometimes you end up with a headache, but if you are patient, it could work. For some targets like Pillars of Creation, it's a nightmare if you wanna process more than 3 layers that are stupidly misaligned, I'd totally recommend you to buy PixInsight. But with 3 filters or less, this 'not very orthodox method' could work
