Why was the high altar destroyed in the interest of liberties taken during Vatican 2? What a shame.

Nice to see Alex's introduction and emphasis that everything is custom built. There are never two pipe organs built the same. Each is designed and built to perform with the acoustics of the environment in which it is installed. I am looking forward to experiencing the majestic beauty of this instrument.

@HobbyOrganist - This is a PHENOMENAL and WORTHY project. And yet it is plagued by the unhinged bloviations of yet another internet windbag punching above his weight on matters which he grasps not. "HobbyOrganist", I'm sure you think your white-knuckle "expertise" is useful to Cathedral staff whose competence, judging your amateur-level musical offerings on your channel, FAR outpaces yours. But this isn't just a "hobby" for them. A proper cathedral organ cannot be some hobbled together collection of cheaply refurbished junk. It must perform a great expanse of repertoire at a high level while being fully competent for their current liturgical needs. *Some* ranks on *some* organs, and indeed *some* entire organs are indeed worthy of restoration. But others - like Sacred Heart's old organ - are NOT. The fact that you enjoy collecting other people's junk and turning it into your parlor hobby doesn't automatically endow you with the scope to advise others. My own parish recently finished a new organ project and I can say that hobbyist armchair quarterbacks like you are the absolute bane of our existence as real musicians and real organ builders. Please -- do yourself and everyone else a favor -- go dumpster diving for parts elsewhere, and then shut up, step aside, and let the rest of us do our job.

Contrast this story with that of Cavaille-Coll/Mutin op 899 of Lujan Basilica, Argentina, championed by Maestro Rafael Ferreyra (channel stylusfantasticus) which by now has fallen prey to souvenir-hunters.

You set out to push the boundaries of what the organ can do musically, yet you gave it 58/30 compasses which restrict it from performing a lot of repertoire from the last century...

This is already looking beautiful! The console has a wonderful feel to it, and the design of the case actually quite sweetly compliments the console. The groups of chamades (below each exposed partition of facade flue ranks) are so nicely arranged and seem like they will fire down the nave pretty well! 😍 Juget Sinclair always builds such lovely installations.

This is exciting!! I can’t wait to hear more about this project as it advances! The seed-to-sanctuary process is one of the most exciting things I can think of personally (as a full-time organ NERD!) Will be interesting to learn what stoplists and instrument time-period/style you choose! The potential here is just limitless! Will really be a beautiful craftpiece in the end I bet! ✨🎹🔨🪛

Seems wasteful to throw away a 100 yr old organ. Even if fixing it wouldve cost the same as 3 new ones & a trip through europe for the commitee. Felt quite uncomfortable seeing a special thing like that chopped up & used as flowerpots & birdfeeders. Sheesh

I agree it is heartbreaking to see the pipes in the dumpster. We had three experts tell us that the pipe organ was at end of life - not worth salvaging. We also listed it for free (just had to pay the cost for removal and delivery) on Organ Clearinghouse for one year - no takers. In the end, we had to have it demolished. Instead of having all pipes hauled away, we decided it was better to repurpose them and give them new life.

Quick google search reveals that there are some fully functioning organs in Europe nearing 500 yrs old (built & rebuilt through the centuries ofcourse, like the ship of Theseus) Oh well, what is done is done. I hope the new ones serve their purpose well into the future & that the pieces of the old one bring some joy -wherever they end up :)@@cathedralofthesacredheartf6961

And yet these are supposed to last 500 years, and this one was trash in 1/5th the time, it suggests the "maintenance" or "repair" people did shoddy haphazard work making a mess of things and making things worse. Of course builders will all say to replace it, not worth fixing, etc- they want the million dollar contract to build a brand NEW one with their name on it! How is it Pipe organs in Europe are far older and in great working condition being used every day for service and much more? A kid in Gyomore Hungary plays a tracker organ built in the 1850s, it sounds great, it does the job. There's plenty of organ videos filed over there and the organist is wearing a winter coat and hat, and half gloves because they dont heat the entire building to 70 degrees like we do in the USA, yet the pipe organs function just fine AND in tune. Frantisek Beer's channel is from Slovakia, he plays at several different churches and records the music- all of them except a large 3 manual one by Rieger in a Cathedral is a tracker organ. My own residence pipe organ was made from pipes I have from 5 different organs that were discarded, one of them was a 3 manual Kilgen from 1927 that was ruined because the church allowed a roof leak over the choir loft where the organ was to go on for YEARS, it leaked long enough that the wood 16' pedal pipes had turned GREY like weathered barnboards and literally fell apart when moved, nobody noticed the water leaking?? The organist was tired of the organ and deliberately made it non functional any more and smiled when he recounted that the organ just "shorted out" Water damaged windchests that had been previously repaired. They allowed people to take "souvenir" pipes home, some of them lead, and that basically destroyed almost every rank in the organ. Another was in a decomissioned church bought by a theater group who wanted the organ gone to use the room it was in for storage, they couldnt get the console out the door so they cut it up... Another decided to get an electronic organ and toss the old pipe organ. Either we are doing things WRONG in this country or they have a big secret in Europe @@cathedralofthesacredheartf6961

There was nothing wrong with the PIPES, they could have cleaned and refurbished the pipes much cheaper than replacing them, and replaced the old windchests with new electric action chests and their wiring.

" Organ Clearinghouse for one year - no takers" The problem with them is they are overloaded with pipe organs in storage, so many churches have closed, many demolished because people are falling out and the facilities no longer have the money coming in. I know of one they had in storage almost 20 years. The problem is many of them are HUGE instruments that require a HUGE space many facilities don't have. Pipe organs are designed for the space they were built for, it's difficult to modify one to fit a completely different space. " Instead of having all pipes hauled away, we decided it was better to repurpose them and give them new life." If you are "repurposing" the LEAD pipes, they are a health hazzard for lead exposure if handled. Even the small wood pipes have lead tips on their feet. The metal is worth money and can be recycled, I had a few hundred pounds of unused extra pipes left over and scrapped them as they were incomplete sets and damaged, the lead and zinc of those was worth around $200 @@cathedralofthesacredheartf6961

Why would you fail to identify WHERE this cathedral is? You ONLY said Richmond. Is there only one city of Richmond in the United States? Google says there are 45 Richmonds in the United States. If you want to raise funds for a new organ -- it highly behooves you to say WHERE specifically this cathedral (and organ) are located. Why would someone wish to donate funds and not know "where" those funds were going?

If metal pipes are being "stacked up" on top of each other they are scrap...The wood pipes likely discarded, a shame too because those 100 year old wood pipes were made with old growth timber, and you cant buy the lumber any more- they typically use clear knot-free often quarter sawn sugar pine or spruce- irreplaceable, and modern wood pipes are now just flat sawn poplar.
