Awesome video. Simply incredible. Planning to do almost the same route this coming winter (Zurich - Venice). What would be the best time to hop onto a train in Zurich in order to catch the morning Bernina Express from Chur - Tirano?

This is great. Is kinda annoying that just a few years ago dutch German and French railways were closing their sleepers.Only Austria kept the dream alive before this resurgence of privately funded sleeper companies.

Lovely video and presentation indeed! Now you must come back to your "home land" also in the summer time and see Stockholm but also other places. You will find a totally different landscape and experience that the one during the winter time (ofc) . If you come please pass my home town as well as it is enroute to Stockholm from Malmö and its called Jönköping and is situated on the Southern tip of the second largest lake in Sweden, Lake Vättern. Should you need somewhere to stay dont hesitate to get in touch as I have a house on the banks overlooking the lake as well :-) Cheers! Joakim :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKnGpWR4Za58i7M

I enjoy your video, and I have to think, how nice you are able to get around Europe via train, Here, in America, it takes 3 or 4 days to get coast to coast. And during that time, one has to endure cramped seating or tiny cabins and a lot of microwave food. And, plenty of delays, because most of our routes share the rails with massively long freight trains.

Most of the trains I've seen running in Europe look so much nicer than the ones we have here in the U.S. Unfortunately, we're stuck with AMTRAK, which is aways running behind the times with the kind of equipment they operate. Thanks for your series which showcase the kind of routes and trains running over there.

I hope you are working on something new and we can see one of your new videos soon. You have a nice touch with the way you produce your videos with an excellent flow and production quality. I hope all is well.

You have no idea how long it took me to come across a video on this talking specifically about a route to Milan’s city center. But just to confirm, does the Berina express ride directly into Milan? I’ve found some contradictory posts (from about a year ago) that said the train no longer runs into Milan and that you have to get off and board a local regional train to ride into Milan. Also, any routes that go to Rome?

I think it’s a bit misleading to tell people the train is faster when it’s not. From London to Paris it will take you 2-3 hours. It’s about half that time on a plane. The train MAY be faster if you factor in commute time to the airport but that’s a big iff, based on things like traffic congestion, distance from hotel to airport etc. Overall though, the train is still imo a better recommendation for people who really want to maximize their time in Europe. Because it lets you really feel as if you’ve seen so much of the continent, even if you’re only staying in each city for a few days.

5:30 that is sea, but looks like a lake. It is called Karin Sea. It is connected with the rest of Adriatic through a narrow inlet. Fun fact, that small sea leads to an even smaller sea through another inlet, so there is two of them, chained one after another.

I've slept on trains over a dozen times, in compartments, couchettes and private bedrooms, in Europe and the US, and while it take a little adjustment to sleep well you eventually get used to it. Obviously if the route is scenic it's preferable to travel by day, but if not, or it's the return leg, you save time and the cost of a hotel room this way and wake up at your destination. My first time sleeping on a train was from Frankfurt to Berlin, many years ago, not long after the wall fell (that's Berlin wall for you youngsters). It was an almost last minute decision as I'd originally not planned on visiting Berlin but I figured I'm not THAT far so why not. But it was only going to work if it was an overnight train. Because it was last minute I had to sleep in an empty 6 passenger compartment that I was lucky enough to find but across one row of seats, without bedding. Needless to say I didn't sleep well and was a zombie the next day. But I did get a whole day in Berlin which was amazing, walking from my hotel near the Kaiser Wilhelm church to Alexanderplatz and then back, around 12km, which felt longer than it sounds because I was so tired and stopped a lot along the way to see sights, take photos, eat, drink and rest. But it wouldn't have been possible had I not taken that overnight train. That night I slept VERY well. The next time, during the same trip, was in a proper couchette, from Prague to the Tatras mountains of eastern Slovakia. That was a lot nicer with coffee in the morning and a car attendant. A few years later I traveled with a friend from Paris to Venice and back, both overnight and also in couchettes. But the best overnight train trips I've taken were in the US, crossing the country several times in a variety of routes, all in bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom and shower. Now that's traveling. I always prefer to travel by train if it makes sense. Obviously when I travel to Europe I have to fly, and when I lived on the west coast of the US I flew back to NYC several times a year to see my family. But if I can swing it, train travel is my preferred mode of transport, especially in Europe where the rail system is so good. I've yet to travel overnight in a bedroom there but I'd like to someday, especially on these new NightJet trains which seem incredible, but also the two overnight UK trains. The one thing I don't like about train travel, especially on scenic routes, is that you want to get off all the time to better see the sights along the way, but of course you can't. I mean you can get off at various stations to explore and then get back on later that day or eventually. But that gets tiring real fast. One day I'd like to do some "bike packing", traveling for days by bike, where you're limited only by your and your bike's capabilities and time, and can't stop whenever and wherever you like. And it's even more Eco-friendly than train travel! But, other than that, trains are the way to go.

Higher taxes and fees on flights, airports, aviation fuel, and so on, matched with increased spending on more environmentally friendly modes of travel like trains, and paid for with these higher taxes and fees, is really the only way to go. Not enough individuals are likely to do the right thing to make enough of a difference so governments are going to have to step in and force the rest. We know that it works because historically government policy through positive and negative incentives and investment in infrastructure and emerging technology has essentially created or made possible entire industries like rail, steamships, electricity, telephones, aviation and high tech. Nothing really just happens by itself and purely market-based solutions are a myth. Only mixed models work.

Also, I actually took Eurostar for the first time this past fall, from London to Paris and then back to London some time later. It was quite pleasant and easy and very uneventful, which is a good thing. I can't say that they scenery was spectacular such as on trains in the Alps, but it was nice enough. And only $52 each way, so a bargain especially considering the cost of getting to and from the airport, plus no need to get to the airport and self-checked luggage, so time saved. We were able to bring a 1 liter bottle of water with us, so no security issues or buying overpriced airport drinks. The only thing I don't like about trains is that the section of track leaving from and getting into most stations can be pretty dingy and depressing, with lots of graffiti and rubbish and all that. But a very small price to pay for all the advantages, and one doesn't have to look outside.

I will always prefer taking a train over a plane (or driving for that matter but in the 31+ years that I've owned my car I still haven't quite cracked 80k miles on it, or an average of just over 2500 miles a year), not just because it's so much more comfortable and enjoyable and far less stressful but often cheaper, many times even faster, and, of course, far more environmentally cleaner. The only reason I ever fly or drive is because taking a train either isn't possible, as say for getting to Europe from the US (and only rich people and the merchant marine do this by ship anymore), or it's just not practical, say for a distance much over 300-400 miles or to get somewhere not served by rail (we still have a very primitive passenger rail system here in the US compared to much of the rest of the world). But whenever I'm in Europe it's almost entirely trains and buses, including in cities. However, I understand that many Brits, in large part because the weather there is often not that great and they understandably want to get away to places that are warmer, sunnier and drier, but also because the UK being an island kingdom (yes some of us Yanks do know the difference between England, the UK and GB) there's often an urge to just get away, travel abroad, and that most probably still do it by plane. Eurostar and ferries have done their share to change this, but there's probably much more that can be done, like more frequent trains and, perhaps, someday, another tunnel, or a widening of the existing tunnel. But I also understand that most continental Europeans do travel more by train than by plane, which is fantastic if true. Europe has an incredible rail system that I've used many times and it really does put ours to shame. Like, a large flat screen TV compared to a 5" tube TV. Love your videos.

I've never been to Scotland but have long wanted to visit since it's such a beautiful country, and when I heard about the Caledonian sleeper I knew that I had to take it someday since I love sleeper trains, having taken quite a few in Europe and the USA. But recently an old friend started a new job in St. Andrews so I now have no excuse to not take it. We have a mutual friend who's also planning to visit them at some point so we'll probably do it together. I'm thinking a day train in one direction and the Caledonian in the other, so we get to enjoy both the sleeper and the sights along the way.

I'm a huge fan of train videos so it was inevitable that the KZbin algo would eventually bring me here and I'm glad that it did. Nice video and can't wait to see the followup. Many years ago I traveled by train with a friend from Paris to Venice on a sleeper and it was such a great trip. There really is no better way to travel in Europe than by train. I've driven and flown as well (I don't think I've taken buses other than city buses or to the airport but I dislike buses in any case) and vastly prefer trains. Not just for their obviously eco-friendly qualities which is important to me too but because they're so much more pleasant than trains and the views are often spectacular. Plus, nothing beats sleeping, showering and eating in a dining car on a train as incredible scenery rushes by.
