In my opinion, corruption is a poor choice of a game mechanic if it involves only a limited number of character types or classes. All the others would have no issues continuing their lives as adventurers, knights, heroes etc., but the guy being corrupted would someday either have to retire or succumb to some nasty fate, which to me is deeply unfair, especially in cooperative games like rpgs. On the other hand, if corruption, horror, sanity, or other similar degenerative mechanics can affect all characters in the same way, then it's an acceptable setting parameter. Being a universal threat, it is not unfair. It's just something you have to deal with, no matter who you are. Using life force to cast spells is not a novelty, actually. The first contender D&D had, Tunnels and Trolls, in its original version had spells suck the Strength stat from the casters, which could end up killing them outright. The lesser version of that, spell fatigue, also appeared several times in various games. The problem with this kind of mechanic is not unfairness, because you are not really doomed from the start, but resource management for specific characters. The more you use your magic, the more of a cripple you become, which in many types of games could could be really bothersome for the party as a whole. If your wizard or cleric has to recover for prolonged periods of time each time it uses a spell or two, the story would become really sluggish really fast. And on top of that, there is always the risk of suiciding while casting, which is annoying. Despite that, if it is adopted as an in game choice, it may be acceptable. Inspired by a videogame called Path of Exile, I have put in my Pathfinder 1e games a metamagic option called Blood Magic, which allows a caster to spend hit points instead of slots or mana to cast the affected spell. It works better without spell preparation, but can be useful when a caster has run out of slots of a specific level or doesn't want to use up slots/mana for a later, better use. Being optional, it's the caster that can decide when actually losing its life force to magic. It's not an imposed mechanic. Besides, in the videogame there is also the option to make that mechanic permanent in place of using mana, which on some builds can be even preferable to the standard casting method.

Well I always prefer to have as many options available as possible just for depth/variety/flavor, but mostly that’s for giving npcs color (having the heroes battle a master of the black robes from Krynn, then a defiler from Dark Sun, then a master of the secret sound from Dragon Magazine, you get the idea), but for players, yeah, losing health from casting would suck. An option one of my players loved was channelling from Player Option: Spells & Magic, the second ed book. In that casting method spells tired you out, but you could use magic over and over as long as you had the stamina. It also eliminated the annoyance of study, or in his case prayer, every day, and anything that streamlines the game rocks lol. The player’s option book also had at least one corruption-type casting style, witchcraft, but again that seems like more of a villain resource, and I would amend that to a more specific kind of witchcraft since I also wouldn’t label all witchcraft or other magic inherently evil. That’d be kinda Judeo-Christian. It may sound paradoxical, but I would have opposing universal laws in the same universe, just in conflict. The universe IS paradoxical sometimes, and then there are the other realities of the multiverse. 😏

That statement of "happier and healthier" actually is true. Modern science shows that hateful rhetoric and Conservatism causes damage to the brain, as its approach forbids the expression of essential neurological traits that are required in a social group, such as compassion, empathy, humility, and so on, this in my opinion both gives truth to the term "conservative brain rot" and why they're unable to put themselves in the shoes of people who are actually being systemically oppressed. An additional study for similar reasons shows that being Conservative as opposed to being progressive/Liberal actually can lower your life expectancy. I can provide the links if you wish to read the articles.

Draw Steel by (among other authors) is not yet realised Matt Colville game where all rolls are damage rolls. I myself am planning on a game that does something super-similar with attacks. Yes it will be skill based. The way I do it it will be possible but increasingly unlikely to score a zero on checks up to a certain point. zero damage will be a miss, I plan on armor being a straight up damage reduction and to have a defence points pool for taking hits before taking wounds. It's just an idea bouncing around in my head.

Gambeson/padded armor should come in light, medium, and heavy variety IMHO. Also leather armor needs to be re-marketed as linothorax, lamellar, and even leather lorica segmentata (segmented hardened leather plates) instead of soft leather leather jacket and pants getup. That said there needs to be a premium fantasy leather substitute. Maybe it can be flexible, durable and protective. Maybe from dire animals? Or whatever makes sense in the area / setting. Obviously lamellar armor could also be made from dire animal skin. One more thing: Studded leather probably comes from how coat of plates look like from the outside when the metal plates are on the inside. Who has committed this error? I have no idea.

I agree with most of what you said but one thing, you see being a white man only helps you if you can hold a job. If you are in a situation where you can, be it disease, neurodiversity, geographical limits and so on, it becomes a curse whereyou are worse off. I'm one of these people, been digging in this for decades at this point. Why do I affirm this? Well there is a crack in the systems we have in occident where we tried to patch for 50 years the services for minorities but assumed that white dudes were already priviledged, so when someone else find themselves in trouble there is a social safety net. When you're a white guy there are only 2 services offered to you, dealing with addiction and dealing with anger issues. If those are not your issues you are f. Nobody gonna support or help you, worse, you get treated like dirt because most people assume you have all those magical priviledges the well off enjoy. By investing into everyone else but one group, you are discriminating against that group. Now it doesn't mean there are no intrinsic advantages being a white man, but we on the left need to recognize that there are issues unique to even priviledged (to a degree) groups. Most men are not the .01% of the richest people on earth, even if the richest are mostly white men. This is a sophism we indulge too much in, a simple belief system hiding some quite serious sexism, racism and ableism. This is also why we loose so many folks to unhinged ideologies on the right, there are a bunch of men with really hard lives tired to be demonized and be told how priviledged they are when they are in fact in pretty desperate situations so they cling to anyone throwing them the illusion of a boey.

I'm not as old as you but I'm not young either. I remember for the majority of my life I never knew the political leanings of my friends, it just wasn't something we ever discussed. Now that Americans are so divided by political ideology it is hard to know somebody well before finding out which way they lean. I know a lot of Republicans none of them are racist let alone white nationalists. If I did find out one of my friends was a white nationalists I would not just stop talking to them, that would be childish. I would over the course of our friendship try to help them see the error of their ways.

If a person votes for the GOP in 2024, they support white nationalism. It doesn't matter what's in their hearts. What matters is their actions. And being a water carrier for white nationalism is morally repugnant. They are empowering people that want to end democracy and establish a Christian theocracy. In a nation intentionally founded as a secular state. Good luck changing the mind of a white nationalist. They didn't arrive at that position via logic. It's an ideology of fear.

Tell me, how do you square that circle? Those that don't care about politics are satisfied with the status quo. Which is incredibly tone deaf and privileged. Do you think the status quo is good for all people in America? Do think that white nationalism is something that should be tolerated?

I agree with you that Marvel's universe is a mess, but so is the DC's one. It's almost impossible for the average DM to know them well enough to start a campaign in either of them. In my opinion, if you want to play a superhero RPG, there are only two main starting points. The first is the one you used, that is at the very start of the supers era. The players are among the first to gain or develop superpowers and they have to deal with the consequences. The problem with this option is that it becomes outdated and repetitive pretty fast, since there are only so many ways to start a superheroes era with only just a few possible outcomes. The second is to start somewhere after that, when supers are an established reality. This starting point allows for more flexibility and more development lines, but it requires a lot more work from the DM, which has to create or adapt a complete and consistent setting for the story to develop in. Another thing to take into account is what kind of supers are we talking about. Are they like Superman, almost godlike, indestructible ones, or just normal people with one or two special powers that any normal human could still kill with a stab or a bullet? Depending on that, the setting and the gameplay can be vastly different. Finally, my personal thinking about supers. Aren't they much like spellcasters in fantasy games, only with fewer at-will powers and living in a highly technological world? Maybe that could also be a way to manage a superhero campaign.

This will pass in Arizona because the Government does not have any Reasonable claim to take away Rights that were already protected by case law. Women are rightfully pissed. You would think the USA learned its lesson about things like this with their failed Prohibition movement. The religious right have been getting more and more irritable over the last 20 years as religious beliefs have been dropped by more and more people. The tension really feels like the early days of a religious civil war. The exact thing that the Founding Fathers warned about.
