Wow this is fabulous. Fifty-odd years ago I asked my teacher in Hebrew school why את existed if it had no meaning, and he said, "It's there to beautify the language," which is an idiotic non-explanation. I have wondered my whole life. Now I know. Thank you.

I am curious as to how to pronounce The Alef with the 3 dots in an upside down configuration an then a line right next to it.... אֶֽ sorry it will not let me paste it any larger....
@timmcninch14 күн бұрын
The little line is called a _meteg_. All it does (usually) is note that the syllable is stressed. Next to a _segol_ like your example, the vowel still makes an "eh" sound.

@@timmcninch now what letter would be assigned for the Alef … I keep writing it as an “A” I mean I know it is silent but then again the “A” is always silent in the English language… read, lead etc…

Thank you, dear brother. I don,t choose between God and the universe. Becouse God reflect himself in the face of Jesus, He himself reflect in the face of a child, in a generous gesture, in the alfabet, in a beautiful sentence, in a arthritis attacht. In your video, lisening the Torá I see the eye of God becoming flesh.

Help. Hebrew without vowels. How to read? Are there *any* rules at all that tell the reader which vowels go on which consonants based on their position in a word, or does one simply learn them by rote?
@timmcninch14 күн бұрын
Yes, there are some patterns. But more often, speakers of Hebrew recognize words as whole units, and their pronunciation is already known. The Hebrew vowel-marking system helps us pronounce words, but after they are learned, the vowel markers can be dispensed with. See my video devoted to vowel markers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2LakIifesSIr8k (I explain some of this there.)
