Wow, what a large mushroom! In Japan, this mushroom is known as "mai-take" (dancing mushroom), and it's quite rare to find them in the wild. Many people enjoy cooking with Hen of The Woods (factory-produced, sold at supermarket) . I'm interested in hearing how you plan to cook it.

Usually I saute with butter, garlic, salt and pepper or put it in risotto, but I am always trying new recipes when see good ideas.

Thats not a cluster of em?? ... idk much abt foraging or how they grow just curious
@Upstateoutdoorz8 күн бұрын
@Nitris-ss9fx it is all one mushroom growing from a single base! The stem at the bottom is about 4 inches in diameter and it branches out into the leaf like petals.

I keep seeing a pack run across my property in the mountain's. I don't know what they are. After the fires in Canada they popped up

I've looked for years and just found my first last year. I didn't think there was any around here. There is no reason for them to be where I find them it is 100% luck. Half of my spots are next to houses and roads at the bottom, and half are at the top of the mountain and nothing in between.

It is my favorite fishing, so quiet and peaceful. I'm very lucky to have miles and miles of small creeks near me to explore.

I just dont understand killing 15 fish to feed a single person for an evening... just seems very unrealistic when we are trying to consider how many lives you need to consume to maintain yourself for such a short time. Maybe let the small ones go for a bigger better meal and for more bigger meals to grow!
@Upstateoutdoorz4 ай бұрын
I never keep more than 1 or 2 at a time. Also, I don't keep the biggest ones because they are the most effective breeders and are very important to keep in the stream to have a healthy population. I really enjoy catching Brook Trout, and I let 99 percent of the fish I catch swim away happy and healthy.
@Upstateoutdoorz4 ай бұрын
I really only keep ones that swallow the hook and can't be released anyway, I am not fishing Brookies to fill my stomach.

I caught my first Brook Trout 2 weeks ago in Pennsylvania approximately 13”-15”. Only the second fish I’ve ever caught in my life. I’m 28 I don’t fish often but am trying to get more into fishing.

Awesome! I wish you luck, Pennsylvania has a lot of fishing opportunities throughout the state. It never hurts to spend some time on the water.

Nice fish! In the future, its really better for trout if you wet your hands before handling them. If he's going on a stringer/in a bucket, then carry on, but if you're practicing catch and release, dry hands will strip away their slime coat which acts are their immune system much like our microbiomes on our own skin. Beautiful Brookie!
