"Nachtwacht", as the word is pronounced in the video, is but one of the Durch pronunciations. There are many Dutch and Flemish (Dutch speaking) people who do not pronounce the "ch" or the "g" in that "sharp" way (as if the speakers are vomiting the sound). They use a much "softer" sound, which is, by the way, historically seen, considered the older one. Originally, the "ch" was voiceless and the "g" voiced. Quite soon after the Middle Ages, that difference disappeared and they were both pronounced in the same manner. That is: both "sharp" (as in the video) or both "soft" (as in a large part of the Netherlands - especially in the South - and in Flanders).

When I was a kid, he played for the Washington Diplomats, which was my hometown NASL team. I didn’t know much about soccer, other than I was terrible at it, but our team went to a number of their games one time we were told to arrive at 4 o’clock so we could do a meet and greet with the players. However, when we got there, we were told that the event wasn’t until 7 PM. No one really knew what to do with us, so the security guys just invited us into RFK Stadium to hang out. After about half an hour, we were told to go to the field, where the diplomats and the New York Cosmos were warming up. So we got to meet Cruyff and Pele, who was finishing up his career in New York. None of the kids really knew who those guys were, but our coaches sure did! After we got our picture taken, we all went onto the field and ran drills with the players - literally nobody knew what to do with us for three hours until the game started. The funny postscript to it is that our coach was a pretty hard-core Christian, as was Cruyff, the two of them ended up becoming very good friends, and stayed in touch until Cruyff died.

Thank you for making this video. Why? Because Ive been living in this hell called Kansas city for 33 years. Friends still can't pronounce my name, Christiaan, right after all these years. Even today I had a customer tell me my name wasn't pronounced correctly. I said, maybe you think you're pronouncing it correctly but you're from Kansas and not from the Netherlands.

I taught my daughter the correct way. Was not sure, as a South African, I assumed it was pronounced this way, but I decided to check anyway.

English, or for that matter, most latin languages are odd languages. They spell something and they sound something completely different. Non-native English speakers find it quite difficult. I believe this system is a vestige from the past and needs a change. It's better to replace traditional spellings with phonetic alphabets along with syllables and dipthongs. That'd help in better representation of the language.
