Yeah, they may build new houses there, but none of them are in any kind of price range that the original tenants in the area could afford. Usual outrageous "property development" crap that you see in hundreds of other areas like this. Private companies buy it cheap, build rip off "apartments" or student accommodation, and the people that actually lived and grew up here are forced further and further away

I lived in Craigmillar Castle Terrace 1959-1968 and went to Peffermill primary school right at the back of the houses. I stay in Liverpool now and went back a few years ago. All changed now. My old street & school demolished but the area looks great. Can anyone please tell me when this happened and if they know of anywhere I can see old photos of the Castle Terrace and Peffermill primary? Cheers

good video. im STILL ashamed to say i grew up there though. absolute heaven when me and my family got away from it. from what i heard after we did the place took a turn for the worst and ended up 50x worse than it was. not surprised like as the place was half empty with moving everyone out so they had no one else to terrorize did they. i miss the growing up bit though. not that i had much with pricks on our street....theres no more niddrie now not a thing left. took the council long enough.

It may be you opinion, ask our relatives who were brought up there in the 40s/50s! they will tell you a different story (x Daniel) Did you live there?if so when? I never lived there, lived at Grey Friars but my family did...life was not easy but not as you say Minging.

@MrRag87 lived in craigmillar from 97 till 03. i left with a heavy heart . Even as a Glaswegian i was made to feel welcome. 5 minute walk from deprivation you have Craigmillar Castle, Views to die for and thank god yer alive! And now i'm down south in Stockport, a so- called affluent area of England.. Sir Alex and Wayne live a few miles from me , but it doesnt hold the riches i took from Niddrie. let it flourish

in both those places, I now live in Craigmillar and such a difference compared to the other so called respected areas of Edinburgh. People are evidently jealous that we have a beautiful art deco building that was refurbed and has not been vandalised despite everyone from outside the area saying/hoping it would just so they could say, Told you so!! Portobello in particular is full of wannabe posh people. A seaside town littered with dog shit on every pavement and graffiti everywhere you look

notice all the idiots commenting claiming to know so much when in reality the knowledge of this area is zilch!! I know a lot of people who have come from niddrie and they are the most decent and honest people I know, just a shame so many assume that everyone sponges of the social and shoots up on every street corner!! Far from the reality from what I recal, I grew up in East lothian, I moved out of my parents hose to Live in Leith, then I moved on to Portobello. found there to be more problems

Good video and soundtrack, I spent the first half of my life growing up there, and while it had a reputation as a hard place YNT etcI think if anything it made me learn a lot of coping skills and strategies that stood me in good stead for the rest of my life. I remember where I lived, saw it 2 years ago, it looked so small once they knocked the flats down. What a radge life it's been.Cheers J

slums are not slums to begin with, its the people who live there that make it that way,the houses could still be there in niddrie its the people who turned it in to a slum.

I was born here in 1966 - moved back to live with my grandparents for 4 years when i was 19 - cycled to work every day and was never attacked by kids but it was no playground. It was a dangerous part of Edinburgh but it's changed a great deal. You could go to almost any satellite town in scotland and find a 'niddrie' ... just like you could go to any circus and find a marty25123. Clown.

I see an Adult learning centre in this video, pity nobody goes to it to learn about life, education, working etc., I can bet you that the Dole office is much busier!? And to think , the unemployment is at around 85% in Niddrie alone! SHAME SHAME SHAME! Great Video though and I love the music!

When the kids are left to their own devices through social deprivation and other causes its no surprise that anti-social behaviour reigns, Im a bus driver whos lived in Niddrie for years, It is sad how the area has deteriorated but not that surprising, kids through stones all over the place, thats a fact of life, its not just Niddrie. Things WILL improve in the years ahead.
