I used to queue at Canley crossing most working days for 12 years when going or returning from C & E Motors where i worked in 70's and 80's

All the locos look so clean and new... especially the 50s, probably because they were... 10 years old... the 50s only 5.. the good old days for sure. Big sigh.

My era of trainspotting as a kid but for me near Romford. Lots of class 31s, 37s and 47s. I loved the sound of the 37s in particular and still do! Thanks 🙏🤩

Thanks John for the video of what I can only say it was my favourite train spotting era 👍🏻 I’m from Urmston Manchester and spent many hours at Winwick junction with my late Dad when I could see the signal box working and those double headed class 50s at full throttle 😀

The first clip was taken from the old signal box at Coundon Rd on the Nuneaton to Coventry line.

What a fabulous video! As a young teenager I worked for a coal merchant who had bunkers at Coundon Rd. I vividly recall the shunt on Mon/Wed/Fri usually handled by a class 25. Once the wagons were left and the engine had departed we would use a tractor to put the wagons (mostly 15t) next to the bunker we were going to empty it into. The driver of the tractor would push the wagon and I would run alongside, jumping on the handbrake at the given moment and pushing the peg in to keep the brake on. The coal merchants I can recall are V. Egan, W. Morriss, S. Porretta & Sons, Co-Op.

Cheers John, a memorable decade and I think that’s the first time I’ve seen a Stratford silver roofed jubilee 47 filmed in service.

As the Drivers Secondman I was allowed to drive these on the Staff Train between Piccadilly and Mottram Halt ...Unofficialy of course,the acceleration and braking of these units had to be experienced to be believed. Very few of us left now who have driven these units. Excellent short film by the way.

As a lot of the comments I was lucky enough to spend many hours sat on the embankment watching the countless freight trains and light engine movements all day. I even saw the class 76s bringing in freight. Not the same place now but at least it’s still operating 👍🏻

Strange to think that "cost" was part to blame for closing the route but yet years later the TRU cost dwarfs the original cost of switching DC / AC
@andrewoverton51703 күн бұрын
Well it would do, costs have risen due to inflation, the cost of copper, and more expensive working practices.

10/10 for braving the elements! Great footage and some great memories. Plus, BR ran a service and would always do their best to get you there. Nowadays, easier for privatised companies to cancel trains and risk nothing as government will compensate them anyway.....

The post war rebuilding of Coventry was ugly when it was first developed and it’s completely hideous now it’s fallen into ruin. The old buildings that survived Hitler’s bombing campaign and the town planners still look beautiful.

Why is this depot being closed,? Wouldn't it be easier to keep it open? Rather than just close. The UK had that habit of closing things down for closures sake
