Wow the nostalgia is real with this video. I prefer the old retro designs of Wynyard and Town Hall back then. Now it's all just grey, grey and more grey. Look at how much seating was available at the station platforms too; not to mention all the rubbish bins. Now everyone's glued to their smartphones obnoxiously FaceTiming or watching videos on loudspeaker, impossible to find garbage bins because of constant terror threats. Miss the simpler times!

I used to drift off to sleep listening to three or four 900 class headers grinding up the out-bound gradient from Goodwood towards Mitcham in the 1970's......on a cold winter's night they had a distinctive sound, kinda scary(as a kid) but somewhat friendly. We lived a block away from the line, and I would love to hear a triple header on the night again. Needless to say, they sounded AWESOME!

Wow!! Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. I lived in Sydney until mid 1981 and remember it all quite well. Love the Sydney Harbour Bridge scenes. Just of interest, the trams used to use the two traffic lanes on the eastern side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge until 1958. Back then, they even had their own Milsons Point Station. Interesting seeing the Mono Rail. i managed to travel on the Mono Rail during a visit to Sydney in early 2000.

The Monarto to Sedan line could be revived. The idea is to have 1800m double stacked freight trains bypass the slow Adelaide Hills route.

Used to drive the K class locos great on the mainline but terrible to shunt with being English electric power would take ages to build up then you would get a surge of power very hard to control for accurate shunting .cast iron brake blocks as well

Such great local history here. That memory etched vandalism poster in the red hens. The orange window tint and green moquette on the jumbo seats and the 6 car set from Noarlunga (73). Seagulls and _sunlight_ at Adelaide Station. We loved that front seat of the jumbo experience. Remember my sister expecting to see the driver's hand appear behind the glass where the emergency brake handle was. Thanks!

What a great clip. South Australia had some stunning railways, locos and other rolling stock. Remains one of the most confoundingly tragic railway rip-up programs this country suffered. Meantime films like this at least won't let that past go completely without record. Something particularly elegant about those 900 class Alcos. Thanks for sharing

2 years on and in September 2023 it will be thirty years since Jeff Kennett cancelled the Vinelander. Sadly Independent MP Ali Cupper who advocated strongly in parliament for the return of the train and despite very low costs to do so was voted out at the 2022 state election and the seat of Mildura has returned to the Liberal/National party. It seems it will be a long time to come before the passenger train finally returns. However with the recent fare reductions brought in by the Andrews government in 2023, the fare to Mildura, now being $9.20, $4.60 concession and even cheaper on weekends, patronage on the buses which was always good is even stronger now. Hopefully with the strengthening patronage once more word gets out about the cheap fares, there will be another push to return the passenger train as a part of the public transport network of the north west. Mildura's population along with the Sunraysia meanwhile continues to grow strongly and will be 100,000 before very long.

I caught the train to Chatswood for school every day around this time. It was just a regular suburb back then - Although a great one (with the many shops). And the station was just a regular island platform 2 & 3 and an unused platform 1. And St Leonards down the road was just a quiet station too. Both stations and surrounds are so different now. Yes it's progress (and a delicious one at that with awesome food choices!). But I really miss the old Chatswood.
