Great info and well presented. Will there be a follow-up video with specifics on how to execute the last-exchange-server decomm safely and cleanly ?

Very enlightning video, thanks for sharing. I saw you shutdown the VMs in VMware before doing a backup & migration, I was wondering is it possible to skip shutting down the VMs and just migrate them to Microsoft Hyper-V when they're still operational?

No problem at all, we're glad you found it useful. In answer to your question, yes, it is possible to leave the VMs running in VMware while restoring into Hyper-V, but obviously, any data generated or saved on the running VMs during that time will not be present on the restored machines. If the servers in question do not store data in this manner, then this is probably not an issue. Also, it does mean that you will not be able to remove the VMWare tools prior to restoring the machine into Hyper-V, which would be preferable, as removing them following the restore is less straightforward when the virtual hardware is no longer present. Hope this helps. Please contact us if you need any further help: 01932 232345

Hello, you talk about temporary storage on SCVMM server for conversion. Do you have prerequisites, calculation method or so to estimate the required storage space ? Thanks for the two videos. Very instructive !!
@krometechnologies
@krometechnologies 5 ай бұрын
Based on our experience, migrating a VMware VM to Hyper-V using SCVMM requires ensuring sufficient disk space on the SCVMM server for several operations. Specifically, you need enough space to temporarily store the VM’s files, including virtual hard disks and configuration files, as well as additional space for conversion workspace and intermediate files. As a general guideline, have at least as much free disk space as the total size of the VM's data, plus extra for overhead. Also, for VMs with virtual disks larger than 2TB, you should ensure that the SCVMM server is updated to support these larger sizes. You can also direct temporary files to a different storage location to better manage disk space. Hope this helps! If you need any further consultancy, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the team on 01932 232345.

Hi Team We are trying same but facing error 12703, vmm can't establish trust for SSL/TLS secure channel. Install the certificate to trusted root store of vmm management server.

Interesting discussion. I think a key point that you bring out is how every deal is different ... and a consequence of that is that taking a boilerplate approach to scoping DD and integration/separation planning is so outdated. Sadly the IBs don't share enough of the information (how often have you put together a DD proposal without even seeing the IM??) so their client overpays and also risks missing a crucial piece of DD that's very specific to that deal.

excellent video. I've been doing this at my work recently. Some things I've ran into are the esx hosts having to use the local root accounts for run as or the conversion would fail immediately and also the tool apparently only looks at local drive storage for host placement rating. I had to create a separate large drive on one hyper-v host to convert a large sql box cause the local c: drive wasn't big enough. Such an odd issue. Once you get past the host screen you select the clustered storage on the next step like normal. Hope they fix that in an update soon.

Thank you for your feedback! We're glad our video was helpful to you. Thank you for sharing your experiences and workarounds; your insights shed light on important considerations that others may encounter in similar scenarios. We haven't encountered any permissions problems, and the servers we used were fairly well specified for storage, but we will be vigilant and provide an update if we run into this limitation. Thanks again for watching, and best of luck with your migrations, if you need any help or advice, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks for your interest and feedback, it is great to hear that you enjoy our video format. We decided not to do the 2008 migration because Server 2008 has been out of support since Jan 2020, but we would be happy to assist you with a migration to a supported version of Windows Server. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you require any help or advice.

I have one question in that, Don’t we have any storage pools concept in this storage, if we going to create any volumes then from where space coming from ?
@krometechnologies
@krometechnologies Жыл бұрын
Hi Abhishek, you are correct in saying that there are no manually defined separate “Storage Pools”. However, all the NVMe flash disks within the array are automatically added to a single pool of storage. When a volume is created, it consumes space from that “pool”. Hope that helps!
