Just a comment on the physics: I've only seen the terms "Helmholtz Corner" and "Helmholtz motion" used in regards to bowed string motion, Also the drawings shown look like the Helmholtz motion of a bowed string. A plucked string does start with a kink or corner, but when it is released it does not follow the same path as a bowed string. For a significant part of the motion the string in fact has 2 kinks moving in the same direction (one is inverted). See www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/Demos/Pluck-Fourier/Pluck-Fourier.html for a discussion of a plucked string, with a simulation half way down the page. See www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/Demos/Bowed-String/Bowed-String.html for a discussion and simulation of a bowed string.

Hi, this is excellent! How do I know in what sequence to watch these videos? I will also share them with my students. 😘

Hi! Do you have any sort of drawing of this? I am looking for a way to really show physically wich overtones is produced with different bowing. The point of contact is the only factor to change the spectrum? Speed and weight will only affect volume of present overtones, but not add any?

I made one myself:)

Hi, Wendy! First of all, congrats for the great video! Do you think that a particular bowing technique or the bow grip can influenciate the overall production of overtones on the violin?

Wonderful! Two of my favorite subjects (violin playing and physics) presented in a clear and compelling manner. In fact, I've used used vector addition and coefficients of friction (without the math, of course) when teaching my students about bowing. I look forward to more of these videos. Thank you Prof. Case!
