My great grandparents were from Austria and they brought over a cucumber salad recipe that does not use any dairy. It’s one of my favorites.

There is another recipe that is oil and vinegar, onions and dill. Like that on a lot also! Both are so good.

This became my all-time favorite salad when I was 13 and I never had a recipe, but had always craved that salad. So, when I grew up I just made my own version and it was perfect. Recently my daughter just begged me to please make her that cucumber salad that I used to make when they were growing up. I just happened upon your video and was curious to see how different our recipes were and I'm so glad to see that your mom and I make the exact same salad 😂, with the exception of the dill. I've never had it with dill, but I'm definitely adding it next time. My 4 kids LOVE this salad, and I'm sure my grandbabies will too! Also, I didn't know to pre salt and drain the cukes... Great idea! Thanks for the video and the added tips!

You’re a complete clown to use paper towels to drain cucumbers. You have loaded the cucumbers with paper shavings. All paper towels shed them and lots of them. You need to use a lint free kitchen towel.

@KitchenDadsCookingАй бұрын
I've used dried dill in the winter when I didn't have access to fresh dill. Short answer is yes, you can use dried or rehydrated but it won't be the same. Still good, but use fresh if you have access to it.

To reduce any bitterness, chop end off and quickly rub cut ends together-sucks out bitterness
@KitchenDadsCookingАй бұрын
Yeah, I've tried that, usually eating the ends, but found out that if I get a bitter cuke, it's going to be a bitter cuke. Maybe you have more luck. Thanks for the tip!

A million, “Thank Yous”, for the flood of sweet memories of my Mom’s very same delicious cucumber salad that accompanied many dinners when I was a kid! We are of German-French ancestry, (although you’d have to go back 2-3 generations to meet those who actually lived in Europe), & I’ve made & enjoyed sharing this salad with countless family & friends. This salad ranks right up at the top of favorites but has to share the Number 1 spot with what she called, “Dutch Lettuce”…iceberg lettuce with lots of crispy bacon & covered with the slightly warm ‘dressing’, (which was chopped onion sautéed in some of the bacon drippings, vinegar, sugar & cracked pepper to taste & enough water to tame the potency of the vinegar). It’s known as “wilted lettuce” by some, but I still love to sneak the bowl to the kitchen & drink some of the sweet & sour, balcony flavored “ dressing”that’s left after everyone’s gobbled up the lettuce. Yum yum! Thanks for the happy memories of my Mum’s delicious cooking!! ❤️👍👍😋🇺🇸❤️

You are so welcome. It's a timeless recipe. Dutch lettuce sounds great, will have to try that!😊

for all the different styles to this dish, your's is VERY minimalist. I use a base similar to this and can completely alter the cultural flavor with the addition of thin sliced sweet gerkin or kalamata rings. One other nuance I hit on was a really good sun dried tomato and macadamia nut slivers. I did my chemistry labs using food and sauces so I have experimented with textures and flavors a lot. Great basic recipe...and it just goes to prove that with all the bluster over the science in cooking, Grandma and Mom still win every time.
@KitchenDadsCooking2 ай бұрын
Cool that you got to experiment with all the flavors and textures. Gotta agree, Grandma and Mom still have the one ingredient that commercial recipes can't get....love. Thanks for watching!!😊

My mother was from the old country too but never did she put yogurt or sour cream in her salad. She'd salt the cukes and onion then add the vinegar and oil 3/4 vinegar to 1/4 oil add the sugar to taste and refrigerate.

I bought one of those slicers when I was a young housewife. I'm 78 now & still have it. But is it safe? I don't think so. I've cut my fingers several times. It definitely makes quick work of slicing most things.
@KitchenDadsCooking2 ай бұрын
It's easy to get carried away with it. Like any sharp item, just need to be care and pay attention. If you cook for any length of time, you'll get a nick here and there.

My mom was born in Romania and migrated to Germany. Her recipe is the same except she used crushed garlic and ACV, and black pepper to taste and no dill or onion. I let the salted cucumbers sit in a colander overnight. It is a favorite for sure.
