After cleaning it up now buy about 10 bags of pellet lime and go to town in there and next spring get you some clover started! You will thank me next year. Probably would not hurt to hit it with more lime in the spring! Without that this plot will fail every time. A few bucks in lime goes along way

I plan on spraying it with Plot Start.

@@n.c.outdoors407 that might help some but in a forest ed area like that will require a lot more than plot start, I wish plot start was as good as they claim but it can't offset 100s of lbs of calcium (carbonate), it can give you a boost but you probably need to move pH at least 2 points to get anything to survive the low light conditions. And maybe without letting more sun in all the lime in the world may not work. I have another suggestion! Maybe go in and remove and hinge cut a lot of the ( trash) trees and let the forest regenerate and you will have a true honey hole with stuff deer prefer over anything you can plant from a bag! A lot of guys are seeing the benefits of clear cutting non desirable trees, it may take a few yrs to see good results but it will provide a lot of browse for quite a few yrs. Sometimes it's easier to do that than it is getting food plots to grow in poor soils! Just a idea! Good luck buddy!

Thank you for the great info. I think in the video I mentioned a big area that the sun was coming down on. I’m planning to clear that out after this season and hoping to put a good size plot there. Right now I’m kinda experimenting. Again thanks for the information. Definitely will keep you updated.

Soil sample should be your first priority. Herbicides work best when plants are actively growing quick takes warmer soil temps. Make sure the herbicide you’re using doesn’t have any residual properties in it that could prevent germination of new crops. You should be fine since you’re not planting super soon tho.

Also, you’re going to till it, spraying the round up is just an extra unnecessary step. You’re going to bring more weed seeds to the surface after tilling and be back to where you started. Starting a new plot, a light tilling is ok but save your herbicide for after you till and let it sit for 2 weeks and then spray.

Thank you for the advice. I appreciate anything I can get.

PH test it. Lime it and plant clover and turnips for the first couple of years. The turnips will rot and make the soil rich for the 3rd or 4th year when you plant some winters greens and clover.

Wow, that's some story about your phone. That's my nightmare--losing my phone while I'm hiking. While on the trail I check to make sure it's still there way too often, lol! And thanks much for the shout out, appreciate it!

I liked this video -- it packed in lots of information and still moved quickly . . . "Pics from the trail cam" -- really cool, especially the bears . . .
