West is plenty large to "have a great time on the hill". There are actually two different peaks at West Mountain. They open Apex Peak (west side) when snow levels allow. Some fast runs on that side!

The best video on canoe camping I've seen. Many thanks! The double pack (front and back) is a game changer. You might consider the ENO - Eagles Nest Outfitters HouseFly Rain Tarp. Lightweight and fully enclosing. Cheers from Texas where the waters are 100's of miles apart. Now, THAT'S a long Portage!

I purchased a new tricks 14’ but found it was too unstable for paddling with my dog and also for fishing in. I returned for a 14’ classic which feels quite big but after a trip or two with the dog and landing some fish it really feels like I made the right choice. To each his own but I feel the new tricks boats aren’t really for fishing. By the way…the cherry trim is gorgeous in my very humble opinion. Also, they make the classics in the carbon kevlar green color now.

Kinda cool mix of conditions. Plenty of snow on the trees, sunshine then overcast. Looked sort of warm then cold. If the clouds were broken up a bit more that would have been real nice. great video - man nice! one thing worth mentioning if I may, on the ice axe...you will not self arrest on an ice slope... snow slope, yes. on the ice and steps of ice you encounter in the HP this pick will bounce and chatter along the way down, possibly inverting and impaling you. if you want to use one proper you must train or practice in a safe (run out) place to learn what is possible and what is not, like all items of personal safety gear. just having it may be a classic false sense of security...

What are your Pros/Cons of the Shadow vs your Hornbeck New Trick. I'm interested in both boats, just not sure about the care of the wood gunwales and pack seats. I have had a Next, a 119, and currently loving my Wenonah Argosy in Royalex. Aside from the element seat in the Next, all of my boats have had a conventional canoe style seat. Clearly the Shadow being the longer boat will glide better and be faster. But is it better enough to only have one boat for calm waters?
@AdirondackAdventures
@AdirondackAdventures 4 ай бұрын
The Hornbeck and Placid boats are two completely different boats in my opinion. My Shadow is made to do miles, very efficient. The Hornbeck New Tricks paddles very nicely too but doesn’t feel as seaworthy as the my Shadow. I frequently paddle my Shadow is Long Island Sound and it does very nice there. I would never take my New Tricks out there though. If you don’t portage a lot then stick with your Argosy.

Tip for bitting flies (stable flies). Deed does not work! I sail a peco on Raquette Lake, in shorts and a PFD. I have found if I apply a heavy layer of water proof sunblock, not rubbing it in completely the flies don't make a meal out of my legs. In the evenings I wear socks that are treated with permiathan.

Know that it’s a long (30 minutes plus)drive over rough road to get to the small parking lot that is certain to be full on holiday weekends and actually most weekends from July to after Labor Day weekend. You won’t know what sites are already occupied when you set out, because there’s no registration procedure at the parking lot. Been here twice, it is nice. If full, you can try Little Tupper Lake nearby.

Some good recommendations. However, I do NOT recommend the MSR EVO Ascent snowshoes. I used a pair of these in SAR work in the Sierras. After 3 years of use, the bindings and plastic footpad became brittle and broke. No replacement kit available, and I could not get anyone at MSR to return my emails or calls. There are good, comparable, lower-priced options out there with better, simpler bindings that also have the heel lift and grip teeth features.

i feel exactly the opposite . I had these for over 25 years I only needed to replace straps on it, and not all of them yet!, they are very easy to do and cheap to replace. MSR (or a Quality dealer) has replacement parts available. i also rented these for over 25 years at a retail shop. (in the Adirondacks HP region) and why? because they were simple and durable and totally reliable... year after year with virtually No maintenance. (they were replaced as needed from general use, so not the same pairs for 20+ years but more than 5 or 6 years minimum. and again this was hard abusive rental use, 4 to 7 days a week all winter. MSR for the win!

Thanks for posting this and for all the links. As a warm weather 46er, it's good to see guidance like this to help me step up to hitting ADK peaks in the winter. It's definitely a different ball game. I don't recall seeing you mention a first-aid kit or mention the need to bring something like a bivy to survive overnight. I chose to invest in Leki poles for my family. A feature I particularly like is the shape of the handle tops. They are rounded and allow you to palm the handle comfortable while doing steep descents. They've taken a beating too, as my sons and I completed our first 46 and beyond. I consider Leki my go-to, similar to the way you like Outdoor Research with other stuff. I really like OR too.
