Hey Sybren, great video! I actually use and love your Calathea/Marantha Mix. It's the best my Calatheas have ever looked (while I'm still having a hard time with them lol). Maybe you could do a video about general Calathea care :) Looking forward to more content, keep it up!

Is the open side to force the plant there for display purposes?
@sybotanicaКүн бұрын
I think you mean the plastic one right? Well yeah thats the place where it can root into! And the closed side helps with water retention as well. Most climbing plants won't grow around the pole by themselves, they have the habit of growing up instead, towards the lights!

When reusing sphagnum moss, what is the best method of sanitizing the moss?
@sybotanica4 күн бұрын
We haven't found sanitizing to be necessary, we mostly use unsanitized moss anyway, we do have some Sphaxx moss which is grown indoors and 99% clean, but actually cleaning the moss after use I don't think is needed.

Is there any do and don't when using sphagnum moss for soil mix?
@sybotanica21 күн бұрын
Good question! For plants that can use the extra humidity around the roots like Orchid's it works great. I also see great success using it with carnivorous plants. However for other plants I found it's not ideal and holds onto too much water. However this also depends on your circumstances. If you are in a dry, hot area and you are having trouble keeping the plants moist it might be a good bet. In terrariums soil it's also a great add. I would recommend to start out with about 20% of the soil volume in sphagnum, and make sure to mix it up well (this is a bit more challenging due to the longer strands) and see if that solves your issue's! If still dry, you can always add more. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
@candoxang21 күн бұрын
@@sybotanica thanks a lot! I've just set up a mix with 20% sphagnum together with some coco coir, coco chips, coal, rice husk/charcoal and some manure (basically what's left in my stock) for my ZZ plant. Will update the result later.
@tylerwestover23415 күн бұрын
@candoxang I never heard of using coal. I pinch a little coffee grounds into my indoor spider plants. When I second brew coffee for a weak blend for the kid to mix with milk for taste. It is good and free to add to plants. Just a bit at a time though.

What perlite/pumice to soil ratio do you use? Would it be the danger for cacti and snake plants?
@sybotanicaАй бұрын
For Cacti & succulents I use a combination of 50:50 (not accounting for any organic material, like coco coir, worm castings or any of the other common ones). So say 25:25 for pumice / perlite and the other 50 with organic material. it also really depends on species, for snake plants above is fine but let's say you are growing lithops, you would not want more than 10% of organic material. Let me know if you have any additional questions! Sybren
@SylphadoraАй бұрын
@@sybotanica Thank you so much! I was thinking about snake plants in particular.
@sybotanicaАй бұрын
@@Sylphadora Those will do absolutely fine in 25/25 perlite pumice with 40-50% organic. 10% sand would be great too. They like quite a bit more moisture than other succulent-like plants from my experience. We even had them growing in 70% humidity in a greenhouse I used to visit. Almost no rot at all.
in some situations it does! But it has it's uses and cannot be unseen in the world of soil :)

@@sybotanicait seems to encourage root rot as it breaks down into finer pieces. That’s my issue with it.
@sybotanica10 күн бұрын
@@Coolguyallthetime2k hmm after which time period? I have found most perlite (little bit thicker, maybe 2-6mm) to be structurally stable for at least 2-3 years, after which a repot is due anyway.

@sybotanicaАй бұрын
Nope! The bark adds enough aeration and drainage, and we want to use the limited space in the soil we have for moisture retaining and nutrient dense components.

love the video! i mixed a bunch of this stuff into my ball pythons substrate, and around the plants and bark hides for isopods. Now i still have a bunch of moist dead spag moss.. will it go bad? Should i dry it out again and then just throw it in a bag? not sure if i have any more uses for it :/
@sybotanicaАй бұрын
Thanks Lucas! No it won't go bad at all, you can keep it slightly moist even, do make sure it gets some airflow and a little light (no direct sunlight) and it will stay perfect. If you do not want to keep it with airflow and light you can indeed dry it out and store it that way Sybren

I’ve heard perlite is better for alocasia. What are your thoughts?

Using perlite you will have to water more often for Alocasia's, which is up to personal preference. But for most people it would be better to not have to water your Alocasia as often!

Can this be mixed in with a normal potting soil to boost the hydration and air flow? Does it mold easily when the soil is warm?
@sybotanica10 ай бұрын
Yes that would be a great use-case! While bark & soil can always mold due to poor conditions (i.e. low amount of light, airflow & very humid air). Our bark is heat-treated to prevent mold, do note that after the heat-treating the bark can still be infected with mold from the air & other components in the soil. Any other questions let me know! How to grow Sphagnum moss?
@sybotanica10 ай бұрын
Sphagnum moss can be grown from spores, or even dried sphag moss! Do note the dead moss will not turn green again, but small strands of green sphagnum will start to grow slowly from the moss. Providing ideal conditions is key here, stable humidity, a bit of airflow and ample lightning all have to work in Harmony for the best result. I will see if we can start some cultures & make a video on that. Sybren
