It's a great feeling when the nymph comes away from the tree without getting hooked up, much easier to get it out of the grass, enjoyed the video as always 👌

You got that right! I lose way more flies in overhanging foliage than bottom snags. It's just the price to be paid for fishing in my preferred bush streams.
@InzaneCaver2 күн бұрын
It's nice to see you acknowledge 'the number of times you got hooked up in grass today!' This is an element of fly fishing that's seldom acknowledged!! I must confess to having 'caught and released more trees than trout!! I😉 Tight lines!!

Hi Joe, Thanks for watching. I was due some luck that day, with all the snagging the long grass, losing flies in overhanging greenery, and a couple of face plants from the slimy boulders. Good luck with opening day. I'm looking forward to the movie.

your drag seem to be a little to loose. Tighten it a bit. I have the attitude of: I don't let the fish control me, I control the fish. We all are different but I don't allow a fish to run freely, hence the fact that I tighten my drag to app. 40%.
@TroutSoloNZ11 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I think that when I filmed these clips, I was experimenting with lighter drag settings. I read or saw a video where it was claimed that a lighter drag kept the fish from bolting downstream when hooked. It worked to a degree, but not always in faster flows. Now, I do run with a higher drag setting.
@2631Fred11 күн бұрын
@@TroutSoloNZ it's tricky, my drag is always one/two click up from free spooling and that works for me in fast flowing waters, but all drags are different. I tweak my own drags. Have fun mate.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Greetings to you from the North Island of New Zealand 🇳🇿 . It's mid summer here, but you wouldn't know it. We have been getting a lot of cooler unseasonable Southerly winds lately, but the Trout have been benefiting from the cooler water temperatures. So, no complaints here 😀.

catch... release... move on to the next hole :) I wonder if that stream is stocked with palominos.
@TroutSoloNZ17 күн бұрын
No, only wild Rainbow and Brown Trout. There are some native fish like Long Finned Eels as well. As far as I can research, this river was last stocked with Rainbows in 1985 after 1 in 100 year flood. The Browns have found their way here without human help.

Great video. My dad is a fish taxidermist in Ireland. When gutting them, it never ceases to amaze the variety, size and numbers of aquatic animals, fish & insects an adult brown trout will help themselves to. In *theory* they should be an easy fish to hook into.
@TroutSoloNZ19 күн бұрын
Hi Garry, Thanks for watching. Your autopsy observations line up with what I have seen in the field regarding Brown Trout. You can add ducklings and mice to the list. It is a pity the attack wasn't caught on camera, other than the violent splashing. I clearly saw the Brown grab the smaller Rainbow twice during the early part of the fight. I called in on that pool on my way home and caught another rainbow, but I missed the hookup, so I haven't uploaded it. The whole time that Brown just carried on surface feeding like I wasn't there. He resides in that one spot on and off and has been there for at least three years. It might have been more of a territorial attack than hunger. Who really knows what they are thinking 🤔.

@TroutSoloNZ22 күн бұрын
Hi Joe, Thanks for watching one of my earlier videos. They don't get many views. It is currently mid summer here, and I have been fishing and editing videos in what free time I have. I have been enjoying your videos too. Specifically your South Island ones. I have yet to fish that half of this country, but I plan to when I retire. Are you able to fish during your winter/closed season, or is it all fly tying and videos? Here in the North Island, we have some rivers and lakes open all year. The fishing can be hard, but the upside is less fishermen.
@JoeQuinnFollow_the_fln21 күн бұрын
@TroutSoloNZ it's only trout fishing I do so my season starts February 15th to September 30th, there are stocked private trout fisheries but the nearest one to me is 2 hours away. I use to fish them years back but don't now. I'm just fascinated at the quality of the trout in your rivers compared to Ireland, I see what you mean about less fishermen I fished a total off 19 venues in NZ and met anglers on 4 off them, pure paradise 👌

Thanks, Davie. I must admit my casting with a normal fly line has suffered from my change to predominantly using the Euro style. Dry fly is my favorite method, but I only get about three months a year to practice. I love watching your small creek, tight cover fishing videos.

@bernabemanzon5915Ай бұрын
what rod is that?
@TroutSoloNZАй бұрын
It is a "Primal" branded rod. I think they are marketed here and Australia by a company called Manic Tackle. The model is a "Zone" 10' 6" 3 weight. This is a Euro style rod i.e. long, and with a 3 weight tip section. The butt is more like a 6 or 7 weight. I can't remember if it is Chinese or South Korean in origin. These rods are around $250 USD equivalent in NZD. I have landed around a thousand fish in the last three seasons that I have owned it, and have broken it three times (all my fault). The importer replaces the broken sections at a reasonable price, and I have several other "Primal" rods for trout fishing. I hope that helps. Please reach out via the comments section if you have any other questions on the gear, flies, or methods that you see in my videos. I don't plan on doing any "how to", or "gear" videos, but I will answer any reasonable questions in the comments section.

SAW this and P1 Cave; beautiful fish. I've never seen a wild rainbow with a pinkish head and neck. Magnificent catch and release of both. A real professional. Thank-you for the trip and the silence that made the stream and reel ethereal when the fish combined them.
@TroutSoloNZАй бұрын
Thanks for watching and your kind comments. I plan to stick with the current format, as I don't feel I can add anything to nature's soundtrack by babbling on to myself in the background. Most New Zealand Rainbows are fairly colorful and have a pronounced pink stripe. The ones in this river are generally in good condition, spawn naturally, and are full of fight. I like it that way 😃.

@Scarbis93Ай бұрын
Very nice spot and trout, Was there a reason you started at the head of the pool? Fighting that fish would likely spook any fish farther down stream.
@TroutSoloNZАй бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The pool is not as big as it appears when filmed on an action camera with their typical wide FOV. I can easily reach the whole pool from the head and see into the tail of it. I left the pool after catching the smaller Rainbow in part 1, returned around 40 minutes later, and caught the larger Brown in part 2. The fish avoid the shallow parts (tail end) during daylight hours to prevent becoming the lunch of one of our larger birds. I hope that sort of explains things. Another thing I have noticed, is often when fighting and landing a trout, another one will almost follow it to the net. I often catch the second fish in one or two casts after releasing the first one. So, playing one fish seems to excite the others. To the point where I occasionally get double hookups. However, I have never managed to land both fish.
