I'm trying to make this. I have made the body but can't figure out how long should I keep the wire for the wings?
@the-needle-felter2 ай бұрын
Hello! My wing wires were each 4 inches long. I apologize for not making that clear. I included it in my blog post but must not have said it clearly in the video. If you need any other steps as you're working, here's the link to the post: theneedlefelter.com/just-in-time-for-spring-hummingbird-video-tutorial-and-free-pdf-pattern/ Again, I'm so sorry for not being clear. I hope this helps.

I love your work. Can I ask how does a person get started in this hobby? Where would I buy the supplies and tools?
@the-needle-felter2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the sweet compliment! I started by buying an all-in-one kit on Amazon that made one animal (the one I picked up was the Dimensions Fox ). It was less expensive than buying things individually. It also gave me the opportunity to see if I liked needle felting. I'm not sure where you are located so an inexpensive kit where I am might be expensive for you with shipping. But I'd look for one that includes wool, at least two felting needles (in case one breaks), a mat or pad to melt on, and a video or printed instructions. The fox kit I bought also included a pattern that showed the sizes the pieces should be. I found that very helpful. My only problem with the Dimensions Fox kit specifically was that it didn't include enough orange wool to make the fox the size it showed unless you made the fox squishy instead of felting it a little firm. I ended up buying one of those needle felting starter kits (also on Amazon) that had small amounts of merino wool in about 20 colors. The starter kit only had wool, nothing else. Luckily, it had an orange wool that worked great with my little Dimensions Fox! It worked out and I had the extra wool from the starter kit to play with. There are lots of kits of Amazon but I also love Felted Sky's mini kits ( feltedsky.com/collections/mini-kits ). They have a variety of things to make, great quality needles, and give you plenty of wool. You could also look at Sarafina Fiber Art's Level One kits (they all have free KZbin video tutorials you can watch before you buy anything www.sarafinafiberart.com/pages/tutorial-series ). I'm not sponsored by either of these companies but I have purchased many times from both. I hope this helps. f you have any questions, just let me know.

This is beautiful but what is the size of the bird?
@the-needle-felter2 ай бұрын
Hello! Viewed from the side (tip of the beak to the outermost tip of the wings), the hummingbird is approximately 4 1/4 inches wide by 3 1/4 inches tall. If you're looking for just the body measurement, from the top of the head to the tip of the tail, it is 3 3/4 inches long. I hope this helps.

Thank you! I apologize for the delay in responding. I don't have a specific video on this armature as I learned if from Sara Renzulli of Sarafina Fiber Arts. She uses a form of this armature in many of her animals. Here's a link to her fox project which uses it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rarHf5Sfra-bhpY She does have an older video that is only about the armature and gives lots of tips. Here's the link to that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haW5e6p9o8yibdU I hope these help!

Thank you! It doesn't smell like vinegar at all. I washed it in the Unicorn Power Scour so it smells really fresh and clean. Rebecca from Chemknits usually washes the wool with clear dishwashing liquid. I think any soap that's safe for wool would work. I just had the Power Scour on hand because I needed it for a lamb fleece and some raw wool I bought a while back.

very cool ! with these dye colours you could make a red eyed tree frog as next project 🐸

That's a great idea! I will add that to my list. I made the Sarafina Fiber Art frog a while back. It's just a generic frog but it was a lot of fun.

@@the-needle-felter im a frogs/reptiles lover, so it would be awesome, I’ve done your fennec fox, now I will do the panther chameleon, and maybe next time a frog 🐸

@@jungle__bites806 I'm so happy that you made the fennec fox. I hope you have fun making a chameleon. I would like to make another panther chameleon in the future with realistic coloring and more detailed feet. Their feet are so interesting!

Thank you and they did work! I wasn't sure how deep the color would be but it is vibrant. I'm going to try doing more with the egg dye tablets and other types of food coloring in the future.

Just started my first piece of felting, and i chose your hummingbird, but when i added extra on the belly part in didnt blend well it looked like patch what and i doing wrong
@the-needle-felter6 ай бұрын
You might try pulling some of the wool off. I will sometimes put a thin layer down first, almost a transparent veil. And then I'll add another layer over that leaving the edges of the first layer to soften the transition between the two colors. You can also try leaving the edges of the belly color a little feathery instead of a sharp or straight edge. That would help soften the edge. Don't be discouraged as it takes a little practice. And the good thing is that you can remove some wool, place and felt a thin layer back over that spot, and no one will notice that you made a change. Wool is very forgiving. I hope this helps.

Actually with the feathers I felted the wire on with felt then followed with wax to make more secure onto the feather instead of glue and used swax from Sarafina to wrap the wires with felt
@the-needle-felter7 ай бұрын
That's very helpful! I haven't tried the technique again because my feathers were prone to cracking if they were accidentally bent. I could sort of fix it by applying heat with a blow dryer. They are beautiful but I worry they would be damaged if I tried to ship a bird with them. I'm still glad I tried it though.
