They are all "take-downs" the barrel is held on with two Allen head screws. It's only a few minutes work to take them down to a smaller package size. Not as quick and easy as a twist and pull a part, but how often do you need to take them down?

Actually...In 1919, Townsend Whelen, with the help of gunsmith Adolph Neidner, created his first cartridge based on the .30-06 case, the ".38 Whelen". The .38 Whelen used 275gr (.375”-dia.)Winchester bullets for the .38-72 WCF. In 1923 Winchester discontinued production of .38-72WCF ammunition. This ended the viability of the .38 Whelen (In 1925, Holland & Holland released the .375 Belted Rimless Magnum from its "proprietary status", offering it to the "general trade". Thus, the .38 Whelen was simply 2-years too early!). In 1922 Whelen (appointed to Command the U.S. Army's Frankford Arsenal in 1921) developed, with the help of Frankford Arsenal’s head machinist; James V Howe, and Adolph Neidner, the .400 Whelen. It was designed with a .458”-dia. case shoulder, not the .441" shoulder of the standard .30-06. Shortly thereafter, famed African Hunter, Leslie Simpson, mentioned to Col. Townsend Whelen that: "...the ideal cartridge for hunting most of the hoofed game on the Dark Continent would push a .35 caliber bullet weighing at least 250 grains to a muzzle velocity of 2,500 fps..." Whelen told Howe of Simson's idea. While Col. Whelen was on a hunting trip, Howe developed a cartridge that he named in honor of the Colonel... the ".35 Whelen". With the proper .458"-dia. shoulder, there is absolutely NO Problem with "Headspace" in the .400 Whelen.

Ar15-22 do pretty well at 14.5 with a pinned muzzle device as a overall critter getter and a cheap option to get reps in, so definitely viable plus their usually even more light weight than a standard Ar15.

Used this setup for awhile with lots of 22lr success. Dont sell the scout rifle short on taking small game as an stand alone tool. An cast bullet ran at sub-sonic speed makes for a effective game getter and is very quiet without a supressor. Having the detachable mags make it a snap to switch small game loads from full power rounds.

I don't think the "sell your cloak and buy a sword" thing is a good argument because there is an aspect of this which was to fulfil prophecy, as we see in the verses to follow "For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.” So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.” In other words, that Christ was *seen* to be in rebellion was important as a stepping stone to his ultimate purpose and the fulfilment of prophecy - by which others might recognise him fully as the promised Messiah. I think however the better argument is Christ's interactions with soldiers, including the Centurion in Luke 7:6-9. "He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” Christ does not condemn the centurion but applauds his faith - no condemnation is offered, nor is there a call to depart from soldiering, such as we see with the Samaritan woman at the well. Luke 3:14 is also very illustrative, where John the Baptist offers no condemnation of the profession of soldiery in and of itself, but rather tells soldiers to be content with their wages, to act honestly, and not to practice extortion. One cannot be content with the wages of a soldier's profession if one is not allows to be a soldier! A further example might also be found in the Bible's general affirmation of obedience to good governance in Romans 13 - the ruler is said to wield a sword against evil, and is given authority from God to do so. The consistent pattern we see is that violence is permitted not for personal grievance or personal gain, but for general social good (law enforcement), for a specific purpose marked out by God (e.g. Ancient Israel's conquests), or for the maintenance of nations (soldiery), or for the defence of others.

The down side of the 270 has always been a lack of good bullet selections, especially if you're going for something bigger than a mule deer, especiallyif you'relimited to factory ammo. If you're able to limit your shots to 300 yds, there are a LOT of cartridges that will give nearly identical results, but there are places where you really need to be able to reach out past 400 yds. In those places are where the 270 has always shined. Both cartridges can take a 400 to 500 lb elk, but they are both pretty marginal for a mature 1,000 lb animal. The 6.5 CM has a better selection of heavy projectiles available, but the velocity is low enough that your range will be limited to the point that a 270 with a partition will be just as effective. If the 270 had a number of 150gr to 175gr options available, and twist rates that would stabilize them, it would walk all over the 6.5 CM, and be a more serious contender for really big animals.

6.5C is not the new 308. The issue is going to be institutional momentum, Nato isnt changing. The bullet tech applies to 308 just as much as it does 6.5. And to call a 6.5 caliber rifle a new idea, well the 6.5 Swedish 6.5 Carcano, 6.5 Mannlicher, and 6.5 Arisaka all existed pre WW1, and we had ample experience with them when we developed the 308. We also had experience with 6mm Lee before we even made 30-06. Further the Japanese noticed the terminal deficiencies of a smaller 6.5mm projectile and shifted to 7.7mm.
