Omg! This is an amazing diorama! I just acquired a Navarone playset this weekend from a flea market and instantly fell in love with it! Thanks for all your hard work putting this together and making a video of it!

Darn..... Both videos.... Where did you get the Stug from?? You passed over it.
@mannie1952Ай бұрын
Hi Paul, the stug is Classic Toy Soldiers; I don't know if they are currently available, a quick search reveals that many of the usual sources are out of stock on the stug.

@mannie1952 Thank you for helping me with this. I was beginning to believe that CTS never made a Stug😄. I have been looking for them on eBay and online for months... No luck. I have come to find out that BMC bought the mold from CTS and It was lost with a few other molds during the move. So these are going to be SUPER RARE now. Congratulations 👍🤳

In 1976 my parents got me the guns and Navarone mountain playset. I played with that thing for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours! However, yours is way cooler.

Thats a very nice set up. Looks great with all the accessorie guns pill boxes bunkers and love all the marching soldiers. Back in the 70s i missed out on the Marx toy soldiers except the large individual figurers of US marines i had about four i missed the large German soldiers also and in addition to the large Marx had four cowboys and a couple of Native American Indians. Back to your ser up its great. Im quite jealous. From Melbourne Australia.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️

George, Thank you for the very kind words. Marx playsets were in full-flower when I was a kid. In 1962 or 63, my parents got me the Giant Blue and Gray set, and a couple years later a Desert Fox set. We also had a second-hand Fort Apache from the late 1950s. I also had the 6" knights and vikings (six each). The play-value of Marx toys was exceptional, and my folks, though of modest means, saw Marx playsets as a good value for the dollar. Thanks for tuning in and for the nice comment. Mannie

@@mannie1952Very welcome. Thanks for responding. It's great to sare experiences with the great toys of the early days. For me it was from 1974 and onward. I still love collecting toys but not so much in soldiers. Although I have a limited amount of model soldiers to put together. Mostly these days I love Aircraft models. If I had that mountain with the guns back in the day it would have been great. I never even had any forts or Castle. I just used cardboard as a playset in my time. I had a thing about cutting out shapes into vehicles and sticky tape. Had plenty of soldiers not many of Airfix but lots of copies that we're made in Hong Kong. They were just as good.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️

@@George-pp2hr George, for me it was those old carboard milk cartoons; I'd cut off the bottom two-thirds, and what was left was a little house with a peaked roof. The imaginative mind of a child makes for great improvisation.

Sir what you have done here with the original Marx set is nothing short of outstanding. The additions you created are brilliant, especially the anti-aircraft gun on the mountain coupled with the bunkers simply awesome.

I still have my Navarone playset. It came with that mountain, some vehicles and troops, and an allied attack force. It was a lot of fun as a kid. We even had some rules and we would battle using the set and roll dice like a board game.

To Tjay5679 I am a fellow sailor who was stationed on that ship in Gaeta, Italy from 1973-1976 as a repairman (Hull Tech 3rd class). I know every crevice of the ship. It was a great time during that period. I lost contact with all of my buddies from the Rock. I am planning to see the ship sometime this year. God Bless the ship and all who served on her.

At 5:08, those two tan trucks in progress, what is the pug nosed tracked one? Have never seen it before. At least not that I have any memory of. Looks the flavor of some vehicles of French, Italian, or Japanese origin, maybe even Czech or Polish, vaguely remembered from 1/72, 1/76, scale miniatures I did in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Though a bit folk arty that plane strongly suggests the Curtiss A-12 Shrike of 1933. It was literally a rare bird with only 40-some being built.

What does Turnpike stand for ?
@mannie1952 Жыл бұрын
Back in days gone by, roads would be built for which a toll would be charged to travel upon. When entering the road a toll had to be paid. One would pay one's toll at a booth, next to which, was a long pole, or "pike" that stretched, as a barrier, the width of the road so as to block the road. When the toll was paid, the toll-collector would "turn the pike" to allow the wagon to pass through. The term stays with us today, especially for toll roads.

I am a veteran "abandoned Turnpike" explorer, having found this via an old road map from 1940, and figuring it out from there. I have been to both Sideling Hill and Rays Hill tunnels, , actually drove my car on a part of the section leading up to the the west portal of Sideling Hill in 1980. Later, I would walk and bicycle a good portion of this stretch, culminating in a bike ride through both tunnels, starting from the Cove Valley service plaza to US 30, and then back around. I have photos to prove it all. Thank you for this cool post!
