Hi there I was wondering if you could share some more information on your ingenious mount for the windvane? I have a transom hung rudder and would like to do something similar

Hi Jonathan, Some info. here : drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7xe3QHhWHrkdkloV3NNTG9NdEU?resourcekey=0-jFz2IUj8WhlWClzCyE6svQ&usp=share_link This info. was linked to in my previous detailed video on my hebridean : see kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKTClpmGrrSLptE but lost in googles annoying 'upgrades'. Let me know if access doesn't work.

Thanks for the close up photos of the mount. I find it hard to follow from the plans just where the pivot (allowing the rig to kick up if hit) point should be. You seem to have it through the second square tube down and in front of the pivot tube, but the plans show it in the upper one (though it does appear in some to be on other side of the pivot tube. Any thoughts on this?....it probably has an effect on the angle the paddle rides in the water and its ability to stay there. I have to mount mine on the transom hung rudder. Thanks again

Hi I've just bought an H1 kit from John and am planning to build it in the near future. Do you still have the Hebridean on your boat? If so, would you be kind enough to let me come over to get an idea of the ins-and-outs of construction and fitting, etc? It looks like Oare Creek to me. I'm close by in Conyer

Hi I am just in the process of making a Hebredean and I have a transom hung rudder (Jaguar 25) Could you tell me which fittings you used for your frame from sea screw 22mm or 25mm and did you weld the joints or rivet or screw them. Looks great many thanks Mark.

The fittings are 25 mm so that 25mm broom handle /dowel could be used intially to check fit.Don't skip that stage of proving the fit.You can use the grub screws to clamp onto the wood sufficient to offer up.Then the grub screws used again on the s/s tube to final fit and hold for welding.Note that the tee fittings were not welded, just riveted after final placing. The tube was 'Stainless 316 25 o/d T/k Welded on-MPOL' on the invoice -basically the heavy duty version for welding.Total cost of all s/s fittings/tube was £152.62.Cost of tack and then final welding £50.Expenditure limited because intially not known that the Hebridean would perform happily on the shallow hull form. Also the first transom rudder application.

Update 2019 : Although a worm gear kit is now available I opt for a cord and pulley system which I can self-fabricate,as an improvement on my previous spur gear mod..See photos.app.goo.gl/HU51SD1vFgGVNfUY9

I thought seriously about this kit and a sailing friend who own a beautiful sparkman stephen design who is well skilled with his hand find it quite complicated to build and took considerable time to finish. He was pleased with its performance but has modified it to give improved performance and steering ability. This put me off buying the kit as i doubt i wd finish it satisfactorily. Shame really as i need a reasonable method of self steering besides my sheet to helm method which works reasonable on my sloop rig but not the junk rig.

Unfortunately my captions have disappeared recently but I can recommend the system - it certainly works well on our boat - especially if you enjoy the fabrication and assembly sequence. The gear has been seriously useful when 2 successive tiller pilots have failed while single handed and a long way from home and is a joy to watch nodding away so reliably,so I deploy it at every opportunity, which really means whenever you have a clear wind and a longish fetch.

Worth noting that the kit is now available with laser cut metal parts so much of the original cutting etc is completed for you, with of course a modest cost increase. Also the geometry is what makes the thing work so well ,so finish of components may be satisfying, but is not the main criteria.

(my transom is inclined) Make the template suggested by JF to establish overall fit and clearance first.
