When Adams comes back in the intro with that riff is one of my favorite things ever.

I love Tool. Probably my all-time favorite. And while Danny Carey is very good, it's impossible to comparatively measure each drummer's skill level and talent. Each with his his own unique style. One of my favorite drummers is Shannon Larkin of Godsmack. He doesn't get near enough respect. He's definitely mastered his own style.

Twice, 12 years apart, I attended Henry Rolling spoken word concerts. Just him talking about his hundreds of bizarre experiences over the decades. That was him in the bridge

Something you might be missing here is that in metal Genres at least, it's quite common for the lead singer to have multiple characters within one song. Some of this song is the Lamentations of the addicted ... Some the voice of the addiction.

Yes the spoken word was Henry Rollins, a good song of his is that pairs well with this song is Liar by Rollins Band. Same theme and just as impactful

Bottom and Swamp Song are so good. Amazing skill sets for a first album and in the 90s. They were above all of our heads unless you saw them at festivals. I was already a nurse with 2 kids and couldn't indulge. Sure loving it now as I can see you are. Your reaction and analysis are really great. Home recovering from surgery and this made my day ❤ Adam does not put space between notes, he makes space extending them. Then the chugging...

To me this song is about being at the bottom & how you survive it. The song starts with depression and self hatred (on the way down) then at the bottom something stirs and the animal fights for life. It isn't pretty but ANYTHING that keeps you alive buys you time to heal later. This is about using 'negative' emotions to keep you from giving up and dying. You see this in the last verse where hatred, lowliness, weakness, & guilt keeps him alive. You won't always hear this advice but anything that keeps you from outright killing yourself (or another person) is preferable. CHOOSE to survive and experience the PAIN of living.

FYI - The spoken word portion is by Henry Rollins. I have seen footage from Lollapalooza '93 where Zack De La Rocha (RATM) did the spoken word part.

Great breakdown Leo. I like how the riff skips a beat. It gives a sense of tripping and falling - same with the vocal delivery. Bottom.

YOU HAVE TO NOW GO TOWARD 'SWAMP SONG' Lots of the same elements but none the less another banger Tool song.

how could you possibly understand the time signature when you basically don't know how to count? you're saying that you're in the tool space ship, i don't believe that man, because a true tool fan doesn't count, they shut their eyes and experience the adventure it brings.

As other comments mentioned this is inspired by a friend of the band that felt they could not create unless they were high/drunk. This affects your sense of self. They want the benefits of not being sober.... but it comes with all the downsides. They took that inspiration and made a song that powerfully communicates the self deprecating cycle of addiction. This is a powerful struggle of many creative people. The cycle goes like this: I must create to be valued.... I medicate to be able to create.... I hurt those around me with my addiction.... I hate myself for what I have done.... I need to feel valued.... I must create to be valued..... repeat.....

first time watching you and I absolutely love how soft your commentary is, I'm able to still hear the song and stay in the moment. I hate when people interrupt it obnoxiously. Such a soft voice, it really adds to the song honestly, thank you! I look forward to watching more!

Great review. I get what you’re saying about the guitar tone. It sounds chill, maybe when high. Then it gets angry, screeches, and explodes. In the second verse i take it as the pov of the drug/addiction. Then the addict repeats the verse at the end and becomes the drug itself. Could be. Maynard is an unreliable narrator. 😁

This song is about the struggles with addiction , one of the band mates friend struggled with it. Read the lyrics again and you'll get it. Keep doing Tool reactions, love it!

The band had a friend who could only perform well if he was intoxicated. He's asking why they have to be sober, because he can't work well unless he's high.
