At 40 we’ve reached our Coast number to retire at 50. How we did it: 1) Start investing day one of employment in 401k, ira 2) pay off student loan debts fast 3) live below our means 4) started a side business at 35 and invest most if not all profits in brokerage and solo 401k. Our brokerage and passive income will bridge us to 59 1/2 Once your debts are paid monthly needs are surprisingly lower than you think. Good luck everyone and don’t forget to live today and prepare for tomorrow!

Does this method work well with retirement accounts like a Roth 457 b that are invested in a target date fund? Or is this usually more effective when using a stock portfolio?
@watson457
@watson457 2 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of target date funds for young people just starting out. Start off with total market index instead. Yes target date funds are simple to set and forget, but when you just start investing and you have an very long time frame holding a portion of bonds (even 10-15%) will drag down your investments in the long run. Shift to a percentage of bonds once you get closer to your target. In fact, I believe those earlier investors should allocate a small portion of their investments (10-15%) to 2X or 3X index funds like UPRO in order to supercharge their early savings while risk tolerance is high. Rebalance out once it gets above your target percentage in order to lock in gains and minimize downside risk.

This is so funny, I have done exactly this but I didn't know it had a name. I just found out by accident a couple of months ago (age 30) that I'd never have to add an extra dollar to my stocks/ETFs account to be able to retire at age 64. I had never calculated this number before and thought I would still be way off! I started with stocks and ETFs at age 26 (inspired by this blog I stumbled onto in 2015.. called Money After Graduation) and I've worked as a musician since, so not even a highly paid profession! Thank you Bridget, for changing the course of my life with your blog! (now business)

Just in case you answer, I hold 50 k usd in AMC , through Questrade, and just the last two weeks I noticed a weird margin call… and again this weeks.. for 1866 usd …. I learned this was interest , for what they call “lending the client usd” this was a super shock.. & not coincidentally, that I found your channel .. 😉👍✨🦧👍✨. Hard to find connects to Canadian investor problems…. Glad you are here. 🙏

This is standard with most margin brokerages, just buy the USD if you don't want to pay margin interest, but you'll pay the conversion fee, whereas with margin, you pay interest, but no conversion fee. Like I said in another comment transfer using Norbert's Gambit if it's 50k.

Thanks Bridget! Great vid… im with Questrade and just learned , they charge 3.5 or so % if a Canadian invests in any usd stock… really hits your trading account hard, so I’m looking to other options… we should spread the word …maybe Questrade. Doesn’t lend us usd…and do like normal bank..broker… and convert.. wealth simple I think doesn’t do this… not cool…. I’ll try out wealth simple through your account , until we , as in Canadians get better… thanks for the solid info my fellow Canadian ! ..oh. & happy Canada day !🤟💃🙏❤️

To factor in inflation, maybe take 8% interest return rate and subtract 3-4% inflation to figure out how much one needs to save and invest. Is there a (backwards compound interest) calculator that we can use that helps determine the upfront investment needed?
@rebeccatrujillo8399
@rebeccatrujillo8399 2 жыл бұрын
yeah i believe you are correct, and I think that is how the 8% was created because the actual average return for most index funds are a bit higher but they subtracted a few percent for inflation. You are planning for say 1,000,000 in todays dollars but since you altered the growth rate for inflation, when you actually retire that number (the 1,000,000) should be a lot higher. I think it is just easier for us to understand and plan for it in todays dollars. But yes subtract 3-4% for inflation, exactly what I was thinking when she began discussing this.

You nailed this! Coast fire is the best FIRE by far. I'll reach it by 40 (projecting). Its like a semi-retirement. You only have to cover basic living expenses after that. So many options after you reach coast fire. Work less hours, increase your lifestyle, invest more, save for upcoming expenses (sinking funds), etc. Just such an awesome thing.

Very useful, I wonder to know if there is a difference between buying US stocks within each of these platforms, as far as I know, wealth simple charges you 1.5% for US stock plus if you are buying US stock from TFSA you need to pay 50 % taxes, is that the case for Questrade as well? Thanks!
@jeremycormier8559
@jeremycormier8559 3 жыл бұрын
If you buy an American stock in your TSFA you get charged a withholding fee from America because they don't recognize the TFSA , I believe its 15% taken off the top in the states before you get the money, And that will happen regardless of what platform you use, American stocks should be held in your RRSP not your TFSA from my understanding. If those accounts are full , Canada taxes 50% of your capital gain and it's added onto the end of your income tax and you are taxed at that rate. If you made 100,000 a year working and 10,000 from capital gains, Your income tax will be 105,000 , with a Marginal rate of 43.4% at 100k in Ontario, On that extra 5000 you'll pay 2,170 in taxes and so on the entire 10,000 you paid 2,170 which would work out to 21.7%. Its different depending which bracket you fall under the more you earn the more you pay in Canada. This is just my understanding and opinion of how it works i'm not an expert

@@jeremycormier8559 15% foreign withholding tax is only on dividends for US stocks. You can recoup it in a non registered account and it's not taxed in a RRSP. In TFSA it is taxed and non recouped. You are always taxed on 50% of capital gains when you sell in a non registered account (probably going to be raised to 75% with next Trudeau budget). This is for US stocks, for ETFs it's more complicated since it can have 1 or 2 levels.
