Do these techniques work with twills and herringbone fabrics as well? I only learned the method where you pull a thread out entirely cross-grain and then cut along the space created.
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse Ай бұрын
I learned to square fabric with the pull-the-thread method but would frequently have the thread break and found it very tedious. After I learned the techniques I showed in the video, I've never gone back to pulling the thread. I've never tried it on herringbone but have used it successfully with knit fabric, corduroy, and denim (which is a twill weave). My gut is saying, "Yes, it will work," but my head is saying, "Test it to make sure." To test - pull the cross-grain thread, align the selvages, and adjust to eliminate any ripples. When you do, the edge you cut should be lined up. Hope that helps!

How do you hide the beginning knot as well? Just try pulling it through?
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse Ай бұрын
You can pull the knot through at the beginning if there isn't a place behind another piece of fabric for the knot to go. The knot needs to be small so it doesn't cause a run in the fabric when you pull it through. You can make a small knot around the needle as shown at 2:24 in this video, - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5nCZH5nqt6Ygacsi=NSSaIN7aQ5buNTFT

Q: What is the measure ratio between size of cloth circle:finished yoyo? And, for the different ascending finished sizes. Please. Thank you.
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse 2 ай бұрын
I don't know the ratio, but a circle with a diameter of 2 7/8" makes a 1 1/4" yo-yo; a 3" circle makes a 1 3/8" yo-yo; and a 4" circle makes a 1 7/8" yo-yo.

I’m thrilled my video has sparked your motivation to do QAYG again. 🥰 This is one of my favorite ways to quilt. The bright colored fabric was not something I purchased but a piece that was donated to a quilting bee I belong to. I bet your husband will love the tropical shirt quilt. Have fun!

I just found you !!! Knoxville TN USA The multi colored fabric is just beautiful. My kind of colors. This is the best detailed QAYG technique that I have seen. And I have even done some QAYG quilts BUT haven’t finished them. You didn’t waste time talking but was direct and to the point. Do you remember where you got that fabric with all the bright colors at. I am so happy right now. I have blocks pieced and ready to QAYG. It is for my husband. A king size. Made out of his tropical work shirts I made for him 20 or so years ago. Such memories.Thank you so much.

I know this video is a few years old but thank you so much, it was fast and clear. I wanted to learn the right way to close an opening instead of on the outside with a sewing machine. Question, do you recommend using as many pieces of embroidery thread that you used? Or did you only use that many so we could clearly see your stitches? How many pieces of thread do you recommend? Thank You!
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse Жыл бұрын
I’m happy you found the video helpful! ❤️I did use the 6 strands of embroidery floss so you could easily see the stitches. I often will use a single strand of sewing machine thread to close opens. However if it is something that will get a lot of use (like a plushie or pillow), I will double the thread.

Came to KZbin to find videos on this subject. I am completely new to sewing, and freeze when it comes to cutting anything. Bought my machine online and have had no lessons, only KZbin taught. I have wasted a lot of fabric not understanding how to cut squarely and then evenly. I completely followed your video until a clothing pattern came out and then my confusion came back. I will try again!

Do you know of a way to hide the knot when starting? Most techniques are when finishing. I am working on a project where you can see on both sides.
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse Жыл бұрын
Hiding a knot when starting is similar to hiding it when you are finishing. Make sure the knot is small. Insert the needle between the fabric layers about an inch from where you want the first stitch to begin and have the point come up where you want the first stitch. Pull the thread until the knot is up against the fabric, then give the thread a sharp tug, just enough to have the knot go between the fabric layers. If it pulls all the way through, make your knot a little bigger. I recommend testing this technique on scraps to make sure it will work with your fabric.

Is this for decorative stitching, or could it hold a seam together too?
@TheRuffledPurse
@TheRuffledPurse 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I've only used it to finish stitches on quilting. The knot is very small because it has to fit between the threads of the fabric and a sharp tug gets it to go through. So I'm not sure if it would hold a seam. You could try it and worse case scenario you would have to restitch the seam.
