It's too bad the future of the franchise depends on the success of Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop. I may be more of a Tetris guy, but doing that, especially with an Apple Arcade exclusive game, couldnt be a much worse idea. And it sucks too. Seeing that I've recently bought Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 and 2, I wanted to get into Puyo Puyo. Now, if what is said to be true, I (and many other Puyo Puyo players) might not ever see a localized game in the west in the future.
@RevvyTeva2 күн бұрын
I personally think that the best way to gain an audience in the west isn't just having a story mode, but making something with some SERIOUS story focus, to an extent that content creators have not just interesting potential for videos, from the standpoint of being a beginner themselves, but that a full series is feasibly from the standpoint of the creator. Not just little blurbs from Puyo Pop Fever, not just a short story with a convenient end, I mean a full saga, perhaps have some smaller non-puyo puyo element to pad it out and make it less repetitive, or even something like starting out with only 2 colors and upping color count over time, or SOMETHING to make it substantial enough to make it a watchable, AND playable game even outside competitive play... The quality of the writing would be the most important part because we already know the gameplay works, we already know the gameplay is fun, and we already know how much the west values good storytelling. Use story as that foot in the door, or trojan horse, to get people hooked on the gameplay.... and from there just make sure any future releases at least have some story, and make sure that whatever story is there doesn't suck, even in any multiplayer focused games

Just because I wanna make you scream I'm gonna say that "exclusivity" is good because it allowed Sega to trick Apple into giving them a bunch of money and time to make a really big new Puyo Puyo game while using their failed platform as a closed beta while they continue to develop and add new cool features. So now when the game gets ACTUALLY released it can do so with a massive set of features while making a huge splash because people literally do not know this game exists (note how Sega has not marketed it at all yet. I became a puyo fan shortly after PPT came out in the west. a UK-based community sprouted around it and i was one of the earliest people that was a part of it. SEGA europe pushed competitive ppt quite hard here in the UK for a while, and I was part of hosting multiple tournaments for it. being forced to play pvt always irked me, especially as puyo just doesn't fare well against tetris as a gamemode. puyo is simply much slower than modern tetris is, and sadly i think the idea of mixed vs was doomed from the start because of that. when PPC came out in the west finally, we heavily tried to get people to move to that due to how bad ppt was competitively. the problem is, nobody wants to buy ANOTHER game that has less content. i don't think there were even many western ppc tournaments, they all sticked to ppt despite the flaws, due to nobody wanting to buy the game. then, PPT2 was revealed and to be honest? we were all very excited for it. official puyo accounts were hyping it up for a long time before launch... just for the game to finally come out and it was such a disappointment. even the story mode is a rehash of the last game. and it was MORE buggy somehow?? how did this even happen?? the launch of PPT2 marked the start of puyo burnout for real imo. people were begging sega to just make a standalone puyo game with crossplay, or hell, just add crossplay to ppt2?? sadly, after the launch sega pretty much fell completely silent. ppt2 didn't get many post launch updates (unlike ppt1) the reveal of puzzle pop just... kind of marked the end of people's interest in puyo, i feel. they made it so exclusive a very small amount of people would ever try it (apple users that are actually willing to pay for arcade??). I understand it's for money, they're a business at the end of the day, but I just... think it was a very bad move. speaking of money... puyo puyo quest (the mobile game) actually makes an INSANE amount of money for how little content they actually add. i used to be genuinely addicted to it and spent a depressing amount of money on it myself. for a game about collecting literal pngs. sega doesn't put much effort into making new puyo content because they can do the bare minimum in puyo quest and make a ton of money off it. it's honestly really sad. this entire situation makes me sad, honestly. puyo puyo deserves so much more than what sega does for it, and it's a shame this is where we're at now. i want puyo puyo to thrive both as a casual and competitive game, i really do.

But also I could have sworn you could have just made Versus lobbys for Versus Puyo Only in that game and still gotten people showing up, it just wasn't the Ranked Puzzle League Mode, but then again i liked going for the crossover matches more so i didnt try to do that too much. (I know legit top tier Tetris is stronger but at lower tiers Puyo was probably stronger to a lot of people too... But I can live with that) I did pick up Puyo Champions but going into that games multiplayer and getting instantly 11 chained for four straight matches may have discouraged me from playing more Puyo Champions vs waiting for PPT2 which was more up my alley. I'll probably pick up whatever Puyo comes next, but I aint gonna lie I would rather it be a crossover instead of a pure game only because i do like the room for experimentation in there a lot more than just trying regular Puyo (where my game is struggling to get past 6 chain stairs lol)

@missingno_fgc I mean I respect that! But most of those games modes are "Puyo Puyo with a Twist" (which is fair since, y'know, it is a Puyo game and all) but they don't scratch that same itch the way that Swap or Fusion practically felt like entirely new puzzle games (which is why the actual best case scenario is like, PPT x Panel de Pon or something like that to add an entirely different additional layer to mix or something) There are probably more wells in general that you could go into for PPT too (I'd have loved it if they actually had Fever adapted to that, especially adapting that for Tetris too), I just kinda hope it's not a subseries we see discarded forever either, lol Plenty of room for More Puyo in all sorts of forms probably
@missingno_fgc24 күн бұрын
@colmecolwag There are a number of reasons why Fever just wouldn't work in Tetris. And I'm certain Sega knew this, which is why they didn't even try to include it. The Fever Gauge is built around the way that Puyo attacks are slow enough to give the opponent time to respond, while allowing for that response to build several meter at once if they use a full chain. Tetris's pokes are so quick you often can't offset them at all, and even if you could, you'd only build one meter. Fever is a game of footsies, and its unique brand of footsies can only work in Puyo, as it was designed for. Lucky Attack has zero room for opponent interaction. Garbage wouldn't do anything to it, so you'd actually just have to not give it an active tray at all - which we already learned from Transformation is a very bad idea because it's literally Void Hole. It doesn't scale at all either, which means it has no endgame. And then dropsets obviously just can't exist, there's no equivalent.

I remember hearing that 15th was heavily considered being localized, skipping over Fever 2 here, but for whatever reason they axed the idea. I wonder how things would be different if they did end up localizing the game.

I think the biggest thing that pains me about Puyo Puyo is that it's one of those games that Sega owns, and has soooo much potential, but Sega just won't do anything with it. And the reason it matters that it's Sega in particular is because they also own Sonic, one of the most popular game franchises in history. If Sega would just use Sonic as a tool to put these other games they own into the limelight, like Puyo Puyo, Jetset Radio, Ristar, and a ton of other games that have better things to do than collect dust, then Sega would have a huge catalog of popular games! And it's not like Puyo Puyo hasn't crossed over with Sonic before- Mean Bean Machine exists as a reskin of the original game, and Sonic Mania has a Puyo Puyo boss in it! And those other games I mentioned would fit in PERFECTLY with the Sonic IP, along with plenty of others that I'm sure would be very easy to implement. Sega could even take the Streets of Rage approach and sell the trademark to an indie studio that actually wants to do something with the games, because at least in that case the games are still getting a chance, right?? Nice video, I can tell you really care about this. Some more attention could've been paid to the audio side of this video since the visuals are mostly supplementary (there are some clearly flubbed takes, some awkward pauses, and a change of music after a while would've been nice) but the actual substantive writing was compelling. Me, personally, I played Puyo Puyo Tetris as a kid who was dazzled by watching old Wumbo clips and never really engaged with Puyo because it was hard for me to approach compared to the very accessible Tetris (whose high skill ceiling eluded me too, but its low skill floor was appealing lol). I haven't kept up with the series much, but I did hear about the lackluster release of both Champions and PPT2, and I can't blame you for being disgruntled. Something that comes to mind for me is how, competitively, Tetris wasn't that far off from Puyo in terms of struggle for a long time. It basically ruled the game they shared, but PPT was itself not perfect, and I remember lots of discontent among people who took the game seriously about how The Tetris Company and Sanrio weren't doing anything with the IP. The solution for them appears to have been going open source, making their own legally distinct sites, and playing the game they wanted to play. I wonder if Puyo Puyo could follow their lead, not to imply that anyone is obligated to do the work of game developers *for* them and save an IP just because they want to play it, but it seems to have worked for Tetris. Is open source Puyo a viable future?

From how long I’ve played these games for, it always made me upset, when I was younger, to not be able to find friends who like or even know Puyo Puyo. Every time I played it in front of people they would always say “Oh! It’s a rip off of Tetris” which was always disheartening. When Puyo Puyo Tetris came out, I felt like my worst nightmare came true. It’s really upsetting to see SEGA take this game that I love so much and watch them burn it to the ground. Honestly, what surprised me with the video is when you discussed about the English ports of the game. I had no idea y’all had to wait longer for some of these games to get translated. I always thought they were released at the same time (if you couldn’t guess, I only play on the original Japanese version). This new knowledge kinda makes me feel sadder. :( This video also made me reminisce of the time I happily played with my friends that would give the game a try. I always beat them but it honestly warmed my heart to see them actually enjoy it. My point is, is that I fully agree with you that it would be better now for SEGA to just make Puyo Puyo a stand alone game again because it can genuinely intrigue new players to join in on the fun! Anyway, I talked too much on this comment. Great video! ✨

Assuming you're referring to Minna, I honestly couldn't disagree more. In fact I think Minna is one of the weaker entries, given that it's little more than a barely remixed Tsu. Even the story mode stage gimmicks aren't really new, they existed as dipswitches in the arcade version. I'm someone who queues for both Tsu and Fever ranked, and if I ever were to make another video essay I could potentially spend another 30 minutes analyzing why Fever has managed to endure as the only other game mode with an active playerbase. Tsu's still the greatest competitive puzzle game ever made, but Fever manages to bring enough unique ideas to the table to be worth coexisting. And as I gush about in the video, I do think the Anniversary games are peak. Obviously none of these meme modes are designed for competitive longevity, but they don't have to be, I think they serve an important role as just fun casual bonus content that can hook players in. I would even go as far as to say that Chronicle making its story mode into an entire JRPG is the single best innovation for the genre in terms of new player onboarding. On the other hand, I think Compile was struggling to figure out what to do with the series next after they already struck perfection on the second try. Sun failed to meaningfully set itself apart from Tsu because its twist is so meaningless. And Yon... just failed to be a good game at all. Sega has brought good things to the series. They just stopped doing so because they made a lot more money chasing after Tetris instead.

@@missingno_fgc I see where you're coming from, and while I obviously disagree at such a subjective level which I may or not respond to later, I just want to clarify I don't think Minna was some really good title, I just meant that if the quality of the games over time was a hill, then after Minna it's the edge of a cliff. And, I'm not praising the older games for being absolutely good, just relatively.

I feel like this should've be named "the state of competitive Puyo Puyo in 2024" I'm a casual player, and I really like PPT2, so much that I don't touch the first one I played Fever a couple of times, and the Puyo minigame in Project Mirai. But I...Yeah, I play PPT2, for anime Tetris and the story. If I want to play Puyo Puyo, I'll play a different game

I speak from the perspective of a competitive player/commentator/tournament organizer because I am one, but I don't think the lack of a proper main series game after more than seven years of waiting is exclusively a problem for competitive players and no one else.

It is even worse that puyo puyo puzzle pop would have been so good to play online and offline if people could actually play it

I find it strange that if they knew puzzle pop would fail, why did they give it so many features and more content (and story content) through updates?

I'd imagine Apple would include updates and support in the contract
