I think there's a quote from Eisenhower that after he gave the go ahead for D-Day he said he felt like the most helpless man in the world because now it's up the men and boys doing the fighting to execute the plan.

My grandfather was a glider pilot who served in D-Day, and then onto Ardennes and beyond. He never talked about his experience with anyone in the family.

One of the greatest scenes in cinematic history! The score and the pan wide pan to give us an idea of the massive armada headed to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. Always give me goose bumps.

I once had a neighbor who was 82nd Pathfinder. He told me when he made the jump, he looked up at the C47 and thought to himself that that was the last of America he would ever see. These men saved the world.

One thing I often think about in this scene, especially during very divisive times nowadays, there were liberals and progressives, conservatives, moderates, republicans and democrats. All of them united fighting against a unique evil in world history. Left wing and right wing, all a part of the same plane. It’s beautiful to know that they could put petty differences aside to fight a threat so evil and perverse that it required a world alliance and response.

May sound really stupid, but I cry at this scene. At the music, at the visuals, at the thought that this was real, and that these men took on the responsibility of restoring peace to the world, and were prepared to face death for it. Some came home, lots didn’t. a very noble undertaking. Without a doubt the very bravest generation ❤❤❤

RAF Upottery was located in Devon, southwest England. In June the sunset time is around 9pm. Which was about the right time the planes took off as depicted here, in time for combat jump over Normandy by midnight.
