Fellow Cerebral palsy here! Why are these questions universal? And of course "do you know X? They have Cerebral Palsy " my reply is now "we're not a hive mind" Pinched back nerve in my back and down my back today excruciating cant move but ironically my last day in the psych ward. This cheered me up and needed the laugh

I hate when people say “what’s wrong with you” or even worse “what’ve you done to yourself” I usually just say I’m paralysed and say to them that they didn’t need to ask as they wouldn’t ask an able bodied person.

🤷🏼‍♀️ honestly.. none of these are wrong questions if asked politely. I think acting as though people aren’t allowed to notice you’re different is wrong. And the response is rude, again, if they asked genuinely and politely. If you’re uncomfortable, you could just tell them that while you may look and sound different, you’d like to be treated like everyone else. And you’re welcome to tell them you’re not comfortable talking about it. But being rude to them doesn’t make anything better. Just makes you sound bitter and rude. And then you’re no better than them. Even if they asked wrongly.

If you don't think a random stranger is rude for asking any of those questions. I have to ask what is wrong with you? Why don't you have any social skills? Oh and being rude back to ignorant people is exactly what will help them to remember to consider peoples feelings before they open their mouths next time.

This was amazing!!! And so witty 😂! But now I have a question.... is there an appropriate way to ask about someone's differences or disability? As someone who is just genuinely curious about the human condition and how people go through life, I'm terribly worried I'll use incorrect words to ask.

That one's difficult. I think the best thing to do is make sure the other person has an 'out'. Ask if they mind talking about it. Ask if they happen to have time. Also, respect the fact that some of us 'wind down' quickly. One of the symptoms of me winding down, for example, is that I start struggling to speak. If your question was "is there a politically correct phrase" - politically correct phrases go in and out of fashion faster than I can keep up with them. Be polite. Treat us as people rather than as specimens. Offer a coffee (your treat). Some of us love teaching. Some don't. Some (me!) love teaching but quickly lose the capacity to do so.
