Heard Salvatore in person, not long before that unfortunate accident. He was great. He had the potential to become one of the great tenors of his generation.

Why can't they dance the original choreography? and the music is really² slow, like the original one that is more faster than this one. the original speed tempi for BlueBird is at 1.5×

Why are people comparing Tatiana Terekhova to Sarah Lamb? It’s like comparing apples to oranges. Terekhova was trained in the rigorous and limiting soviet tradition of Vaganova while Lamb was trained in the United States where no such training method exists. there’s a 20 year gap between their careers. Ballet has evolved a great deal, both in Russia and the west since Terekhova’s time. Besides, the artistic ideals of the Kirov Ballet circa 1989 and the Royal Ballet circa 2009 are diametrically opposite from one another. The expectations of their respective audiences aren’t even the same. One thing that has not changed since the dawn of time is the tendency of young dancers to comment glibly on ballet performances as if they are experts on the topic when in fact they have no actual experience to back up their opinions. Just a heads up to all you self-styled dancers out there: taking ballet does not make you one a ballerina. Studying ballet for 8 years does not automatically make one an expert. You may call yourself a dancer but, until dancing is the means by which you put food on your table, you are merely a student. Furthermore, if you are 21 or younger, regardless of the quality of your training, you do not have the experience to make an educated critique of a working professional. Save your comments for a time when you actually have the experience you think you already have.

Oh my... why is Tatiana Terekhova, one of the greatest Kirov ballerinas ever, dancing at a snail's pace?! This is absolutely absurd; she was perfectly capable of dancing very musically accurate! What was she thinking?!

DarkDancer06 the tempo of a variation is rarely a choice that is left up to the dancer personally. Tempo is the kind of decision that is made by the artistic director or the conductor. I wouldn’t attribute that particular aspect of this performance to Terekhova. Besides, it’s a perfectly common practice to slow down a variation from allegro to andante as a means of highlighting the exceptional control and technique of a particular dancer. Dancing slowly is much harder than dancing quickly. This is not the first time such a change was made, either for one dancer in particular or for all artists cast in that particular role. It is called a variation for a reason. It means that details vary from one artist to another in order that the solo display the qualities most exemplified by the artist performing the role. Even actors tweak the script of a play to suit their own needs. This flexibility is one of the perks of being a principal dancer.

That is the kind of decision that is made by the artistic director or the conductor. I wouldn’t attribute that particular aspect of this performance to Terekhova. Besides, how do you know this isn’t the tempo originally intended by Tchaikovsky? Tempo is the most typical quarrel between conductors and artistic directors and in the long run, the conductor will always win in any argument on this topic. Conductors actually have written information from the composer regarding these details, whereas there is no such information from the source in regards to Petipa’s choreography. All we have to go by with his choreography is the testimony of dancers from the past. Memories are not the most reliable resource when re-staging a classic. If you’ve ever played the Telephone Game you know that nothing that is passed aurally retains all of its original character when it is repeated by a new speaker. (Or dancer)

On the surface, this casting seems to be outrageous and out of hierarchy. But at that time as I remember correctly, Lezhnina was her precious protegee. So this was a graceful gesture and a gift from the great ballerina and a great coach.

well is Vagánova Thecnique....this solo is very Stacatto, is true, but her arms are in the right placeare there, in the same place where the left Petipa and Vaganova, ,she was an extraordinary ballet star, failed to be named Prima Ballerina Assoluta of Kirov Ballet, but certenly deserved it!!

@balletboy13 This music makes me feel sick. Memories from the past >shudders< I remember how tired I used to be after the pdd and then do this variation and still have those bloody brisé volé still ahead of me... bleurgh but at the same time I look back and part of me loves the fact I did it. I loved coming off stage so tired I wanted to throw up. It meant I'd done a good day's work :) People who's never done it can't imagine it. And if you are NOT tired after it, you're not pushing yourself!
