Fantastic video James. Keep up the great work :-) So triple only for noise reduction and doesnt improve insulation?

Educating the dumb -(est people of the planet)... While all civilized world moved to double pane eighty years + ago, there are some on a certain continent, the place where men compete without any barrier in woman's competitions as a normal thing, who need education on the fact that there are double pane windows... Not mentioning triple pane because it will confuse those morons to the extent they might fall off a cliff, like their dumb leader falls on stairs, or while riding a bike, or simply from a stage...

So useless... So what type of climate is the triple good for? I love in Canada with winters of -20c and summers of +30c. Is double good enough or do I need triple??

Does anyone know how thick a double paned should be in reducing traffic noises?? Like how much mm would be ideal?
@JakubBojanowski94
@JakubBojanowski94 9 ай бұрын
The thicker the better. Most importantly you want one to be thicker than the other or they may start to resonate. It can be achieved either by the glass sheet itself or better yet by a second piece of glass glued to the first one. In between there is a foil you can’t see but since it’s polymer-based it helps to further reduce vibrations caused by sound waves. Not sure you have all that in the new world but that’s what we do across the pond anyway, hope that helps. Cheers!

If you have trouble sleeping just use some ear plugs, much much cheaper than triple glass which only knocks a couple of db at most over double.

Are you sure it's only 2 dB? Even 3 dB of attenuation is significant.

Since Skyguard isn't listed in the NFRC database, I don't know if you manufacture your own windows or if you install someone else's, so I don't know whose coatings that you have on your window glass. In any case, I am going to address the several misconceptions that you have concerning LowE coatings. Low-E or LowE or LoE (depending on the source), is short for low Emissivity, not low missivity. LowE coatings are primarily designed to control IR (Infrared) not UV. LowE coatings do block UV but that isn't the primary purpose of the coating. Blocking UV is secondary. All LowE coatings block far infrared light (heat) pretty well, but there are different levels of blocking near infrared light (direct solar heat gain). Coatings are often referred to as, High Solar Heat Gain, Moderate Solar Heat Gain, and Low Solar Heat Gain. Hardcoats or pyrolytic are applied while the glass is still very hot in the float line using a process called Chemical Vapor Deposition. Hardcoats are primarily tin oxide, but the tin may be combined with other materials such as titanium depending on intended application and performance. Hardcoats are not going to flake off the glass, they are very durable and can be used exposed to air so they are ideal for a single pane glass application such as a storm door or storm windows. The biggest downside to hardcoats is that they tend to be somewhat hazy and most don't block direct solar heat gain. Soft or sputter coats are available in single layer, double layer, triple layer, and quadruple layer versions, again depending on application. Soft coats are applied using a process called Magnetron Sputter Deposition in plasma filled vacuum chambers. There is no liquid, there is no weave, honestly I don't even know what you meant by weave, but nothing "solidifies" in the glass. Again, I don't even know what that means. The coatings consist of multiple layers of different metals and metal oxides with silver being the primary operative material. Single, dual, triple, and quadruple refer to the number of layers of silver in the specific coating. The other metals are there to enhance clarity and protect the silver layer(s). Most hardcoats and single silver softcoats are high solar heat gain, dual silver and some hardcoats are moderate solar heat gain, while triple and quad silver layer coatings are low solar heat gain. And even so-called low-end windows have the same access to, and use, the highest quality coated glass available, the same coatings that the high end windows use.

Whats if i do 6 layers of glass ?
@eurovisie2010
@eurovisie2010 Жыл бұрын
Well you can go up to 8 layers of,....... NO,.. NOT glass. But two layers of glass and the others of lightweight film.. So you end up with extremely insulation see in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKrpHWhrJiNitU

I've heard that for good noise reduction you HAVE to use different thickness of glass used in the 3 pane window ! I don't know. You've got to research this if your at the point of buying..

Not necessarily. Although very commonly stated as an attribute of triple pane windows, improved sound performance isn't a given when moving from dual pane to triple pane windows. A National Research Council of Canada study several years back concluded that "Despite the widespread belief that adding another layer of glass must be beneficial, triple glazing provides essentially the same noise reduction as double glazing, unless the interlayer separation is very large." MIT also did a study with the same conclusion. Ultimately any potential advantage of triple pane over dual pane becomes more pronounced when using wider airspaces as noted in the above quote. The optimum airspace in a window IGU for energy performance is about 7/16" to 9/16" or about 11mm - 14mm. The potential advantage in sound performance when using a triple pane would occur when the two airspaces individually are in the same width range as the single space in the dual pane, so that the combination of the dual airspaces in the triple result in an overall airspace from something like 7/8" - 1-1/8" or 22mm - 28mm. At about 25mm or more is when the advantage of the wider airspace becomes noticeable, so while wider is better, unless it's pushing 1" the potential for sound improvement over dual pane is minimal.

So now this fraud comes in triple flavors? Double pane windows are a fraud cooked up by the window industry years ago. I grew up in a house with single pane windows and we never had exorbitant heating/cooling bills. The only thing exorbitant are the cost of double pane windows, which need replacing on a regular basis. Single pane never need replacing unless a baseball or tree limb crashes through it.

In terms of thermal properties, triple pane performs well but that’s where it ends. Unless you’re getting it from Europe, US made triple pane IGUs have terrible track record of flaws and distortion. In particular, builder grade windows with triple pane are downright garage. As for sound reduction, this gentleman is greatly misinformed. The only IGUs that help reduce noise are laminated glass and IGUs with different thickness.
