For F-1 visa holders, married to US citizens, AND form I-485 (adjustment of visa status) filed. This scenario is allowed for normal conventional loans.

My parents want to help me get mortgage our documented non-us income is around $15000 a month. I talked to HSBC they said they would give me mortgage but they want 40% down payment this is the real challenge for us. Do you guys know any union or bank that can help us with lower down payment?

What do i put in the household income if i am a fully finded phd student receiving stipends? Tuition + stipends? Or only stipends?
@PFforPhDs
@PFforPhDs 2 ай бұрын
Generally speaking, only your stipend. The great majority of graduate students make the awarded income that pays their tuition tax-free by using their tuition as a qualified education expense under the tax-free scholarships and fellowships higher education tax benefit.

Where does one enter the extra QEEs if not when filling in from the 1098-T? Also is there anywhere that would explicitly call out the QEEs or is that its own separate scavenger hunt?
@PFforPhDs
@PFforPhDs 5 ай бұрын
Competent tax software should prompt you for additional expenses not reported on your Form 1098-T. IRS Publication 970 Chapter 1 defines QEEs for the purpose of making scholarship/fellowship income tax-free. I also go through numerous common expenses for graduate students and whether/which definition of QEE they fit in my tax workshop (really spell it out): pfforphds.com/phd-tax-workshops/

Hello! Thank you for posting this! I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I'm married and started my fellowship this Fall 2023, and learned that I should start paying quarterly taxes! Can you please give me some advice? After consideration I stopped the program this December. I was paid for the fellowship untaxed from Late August to December 30th. I am also married, and regularly file jointly with my Husband. Since I am no longer continuing my program, I am trying to determine if it is important for me to pay quarterly Taxes, Due January 15th, or if it would be better to pay my tax bill with my normal Married filing joiint Annual Tax Return due in April. Does filing estimated taxes as an individual prevent me from being able to file jointly with my Husband for Federal annual Taxes?
@PFforPhDs
@PFforPhDs 8 ай бұрын
To your last question: You can still file jointly with fellowship income. The answers to your other questions will be found by filling out IRS Form 1040-ES. That will tell you whether you owe estimated tax by 1/16/2024 or can wait to pay with your return. (You can wait even if required to pay, but you may incur a penalty.) If you need help with how to fill out this form, you can join my workshop: pfforphds.com/qetax/ Don't forget about state tax as well, if applicable!

Great episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe people who are in this boat or have "sailed" with it can relate. Thanks for sharing, Dr. Horwitz. Big ups to your hubby. It takes two to tango, especially in marriage. Couples have to support each other. I understood that aspect of having to see counselor(s) to figure things out. It gets to a head at times 🙂. But you guys survived it. Best to you and your family. And thanks Dr. Emily for bringing her 🙂.

I am not trying to "spoil" business for Sam, but rather elicit some conversation. The author of "I Will Teach You To Be Rich", a book you have referenced and/or recommended in one of your episodes, has a strong arugument for buying a house. I recently saw a short clip by Dave Ramsey's daughter stating thw high cost that people pay for mortgage. For a graduate student that is unencumbered (e.g. no children), should they really be buying a house at this stage? Should they not rather put the money into 457, IRA (ROTH or Traditional), Target Day Fund, Mutual Fund, Index Fund and other funds They say the stock market's return historically and conservatively is 7-8%; some people say 10%. Anyway, given fhe cost involved in closing, repairs, and other fees associated with home buying which Ramit Sethi refers to as "phantom", should a graduate student pursue this investment path? I hope you can do an episode on this topic.

This is a totally legitimate question and a great idea for an episode! It is all about the numbers, and everything you mentioned should be taken into consideration. The NYT rent vs. buy calculator factors it all in so I would probably model an episode on that. It DOESN'T make sense to buy a primary residence in many scenarios (if you plan to sell when you move away, which you don't have to, and Sam and I discuss that strategy elsewhere, e.g., kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYSVqZKdqLZkjLs). The reason I mention house hacking so often for grad students and postdocs is that your primary residence is a HUGE cost whether you buy or rent. House hacking is a rare opportunity to reduce or eliminate your personal housing costs. House hacking is actually a (partial) investment path, as you put it, whereas purchasing a primary residence is not. BTW I have mad respect for Ramit Sethi and I love his podcast BUT I think he's really skewed on the home buying issue. (It pays to proffer countercultural opinions; see Dave Ramsey...) As an adult he's mostly lived in NYC and SF where renting is the default and makes the most financial sense even over the long term. He's trying to take the mindset he's been socialized into in those cities and apply it everywhere else in the US. Ramit's wealth has come from business ownership primarily, whereas for most Americans, home ownership is a major aspect of wealth-building over the decades. (See: the causes of the black-white wealth gap.) (Not, in my mind, so much by building the equity, but rather by setting up your personal housing expense to decrease over time relative to rent.) Basically, Ramit is wealthy enough that he CAN elect to be a long-term renter without harming his finances; that's not the case for the vast majority of Americans. His point about phantom costs is absolutely fair and can be taken into account in the estimates.

Thanks, Dr. Bennion for sharing. Liked the last part for non-traditional graduate students with kid(s) as well as the point on applying the concept of scientific collaboration to talking about your finance. Unlike in that the minutest result is shared, people don't share things (to a large degree I would contend) about finance/investments. It is kept close to the chest 🙂. But platforms such as Emily's is doing a good job to change such narrative.

Is there a recommendation for when the university gives us a 1099-NEC and our CPA files it as self-employment taxes? (even when it was noted that it was a fellowship and the stipend is a one time payment)

Another one I want to add is The Money Guy Show. I like their data-driven approach to speaking about personal finance. Maybe I like them as a quant-loving person. Thanks Emily for the awesome work you are doing. I wanted to acquire some knowledge in this space (PF) at the start of this yeayr. Towards the end of last year, I stumbled upon Dave Ramsey,'s show. Then this year, I found the one I mentioned above and just a couple of weeks ago, I found ypurs too. I am soaking in all the strategies for now 🙂.
