This is MY opinion so take it for what it's worth (to you). Hitting an approach shot deep and down the middle, in theory, is good because as you've heard over and over, it cuts down sharp angles that your opponent can hit. HOWEVER, if your opponent has good ground strokes, she's going to pass you somewhat easily, depending on your athleticism. Shannon does a great job getting to the net quickly, but she doesn't hit shots that make her opponent struggle to hit a good passing shot. Instead, ONLY come in behind a shot that is to your opponents weaker side, causing them to hit a weak return so you can finish the point.Shannon's footwork on the serve and return of serve is excellent. I would like to see her split step on her final step coming to the net to better prepare her for the next shot from her opponent. Great job, Shannon! By now (2 years later), I would like to see another one of her matches.

But the problem is he was trying to hit the other person. Not the guy who body bagged him. A nasty Nelson isn't a bad move sometimes if you can catch them off guard.

Just curious, but how does this division/match differ from the gold medal 30+ match Ben and Mandy played? Was there an Open division as well as a 5.0 one? I have not been to the US Open to know of there is a difference.

Just looked them up, they won 30-34, I guess it's considered an open age division. This tournament was skill/age.

Not soft! He responded to the "too small" gesture by beating down the other team. I think it's okay to call someone out and talk back to someone when they start chirping. Ultimately they showed they are the stronger team.

100% not a hindrance. You could make an argument for a distraction though. 😊

Ben, you are the goat ref, what is the difference between hinderance and distraction?
@benjamindavis2213
@benjamindavis2213 5 ай бұрын
Rules 3.a.7 and 3.a.16 in the USAPA 2024 Official Rulebook. Basically, hinders are not caused by players in the match and result in replays. Distractions are done by players in the match and result in faults.
@fourthshotpickleball

@@benjamindavis2213 ah yes, thank you for clarifying the difference. Do you think you would have called a distraction? Related question- have you ever called a distraction in a match?
@benjamindavis2213

@@fourthshotpickleball The on-court referee did not call a distraction, so by rule it's not a distraction. Yes, I have called distractions. They were generally due to players yelling while their oppenents were hitting the ball.

I’ve seen people wave their paddle in the air multiple times and it wasn’t called hindrance. I haven’t read the rule, but assume it’s more with making sounds/yelling.

9 ounces is very heavy geez!! Is this your doubles and singles paddle? I take it hand speed is not an issue?
@fourthshotpickleball
@fourthshotpickleball 7 ай бұрын
What paddle weight are you currently using? This is my singles and doubles paddle. My singles style is a placement over power style, so I have had success using this paddle. But frankly if you can afford to have different setups for each game, I think it is worth pursuing.
@fourthshotpickleball

Oh my hand speed is not one of my superpowers but can hang in the 5.0 and Open level tournaments I play.
@davidallott5826
@davidallott5826 7 ай бұрын
Good process. Just keep in mind once you add an overgrip, electrical and lead tape, you are increasing your total paddle weight by probably 30 grams. Even more so if you use proper edge protection tape instead of electrical tape. This puts your 8.1 ounce stock paddle at well over 9 ounces. That might work for the pros and for you, but will be too heavy for most amateur / rec players to keep their hand speed.
@fourthshotpickleball
@fourthshotpickleball 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. I just weighed my paddle and it is 9.35oz. You are certainly correct that adding the lead plus over grip, (imo electrical tape is negligible) comes at a cost of hand speed and a learning curve of getting used to a different feel with a paddle which is not tolerable by all. I played for about 2 years before I opted to experiment with lead tape and heavier paddles. Though now, I would not go back to using stock paddles after playing with this setup for 3+ years.

Black shirt is Arpit Dhir. His return of serve got him to the gold match so his game deserves a lot of credit. Blue shirt is Jason Renner and he is really talented at using his footwork to run around his backhand to create shots with his forehand.
