Hi, I'm Alfred. I'm new to the channel and interested in the bread routes business, which seems quite fascinating. I have a couple of questions: If I purchase a Flowers bread route, do I need to personally drive and operate the route, or can I hire someone to run it while I manage things from the side? I understand the profit might take a hit, but is this approach allowed? If I purchase bread products, does Flowers accept payments via credit card, particularly American Express, or do they only accept cash, checks, or debit cards? Thank you in advance for your response!

I have a friend that owns a mission route, changed his life. They incentivize owning more than one route by increasing commission. For example one route may get 21% to owning three routes and getting 25%. He owns one route and is looking to buy his second. The issue is no financing and have to pay about 100k-150k cash for the route.

@kennyvet5037 Thanks for the continuous engagement, that is the way to go when it comes to Buying more routes, what I would tell him is to build up equity in the business he has and borrow against it for the next one… The catch with that is he will be locking them together.. Margin is based on the area, and I imagine the incentive is as well. Margin in the WA State area is ~17.5% net, ~16% gross (commission deducted equivalent to sales).

13-1 is what Bimbo will finance. Anything over that comes out of your pocket. It’s not what Bimbo considers fair market value. It only has to do with finance. Fair market value is whatever you can get for it or what someone is willing to pay.

Food for thought; even though Pepperidge Farm has the most expensive routes, they have the lowest down payment to get started because they offer financing.

Ratios are based on the sales of the previous 20 or so routes so they can fluctuate.

When I started in the bread business in 1977 we were required to wear a shirt, tye slacks, and dress shoes. We could not have facial hair or tattoos that could be seen. Nowadays breadmen don't look at all professional. I was a bread man for over thirty years and don't miss it a bit!!

Im currently working for a bread company in the midwest similar to sara lee where you dont own the route its just the same route as if you did. Wondering if i should look into getting a route im currectly making a little of $100,000 a year before taxes/insurance. Any opinions or facts

I am retired after thirty years in the bread business, before that I was a retail clerk for six years. I worked for Oroweat in the Los Angeles area and I made very good money and I was in the Teamsters Union. I ruined my body doing that job and so if you buy a route you will end up with some money because you might be able to sell your route but not for a lot of money!! If I didn't have my pension and amt pension medical I would not advise buying a bread route. The life of a bread man totally sucks and it will ruin your family. I also had to deal with armed robberies because I worked in black areas and in those the routes are cheaper because of the risk of getting murdered by people who hate you because you don't look like them! Whatever you do good luck but don't listen to these guys who know absolutely nothing about te bread business!!

I feel like there was a lot of information that was left out of this interview for people who are just getting into this business. How much does it cost to get into this business? What type of truck you need? How much can you make off these routes? Who do you contact and buy routes from? I feel like all this information is being held back for beginners that are looking to get into this business, not a good interview to me.

These hourly employees can’t empathize with someone that has struck out to be in business for them self. Making friends with the reset teams has been something I’ve picked up and seen as a need. We are all part of a chain. Good luck bro it’s a discouraging feeling.

I agree when you have to price every single one with an orange label, it’s overkill, not to mention it doesn’t look uniform because you’re not going to be able to get the sticker in the same spot every time. I do like to use orange buy one get one free stickers and new item stickers on my chips to make them stand out.

I like to merchandise my stores 7 days a week first 90 days. Bold that relationship. Also you can always catch a break when you need one cause store leaders know you a grinder.

I been slanging bread 3 years. I work for bimbo. I had started in grocery stores at 30 and found it could make decent money but always wanted more. My family grew and I applied with Bimbo. Changed my life brother made 96 on paper last year. I got a GED bro dropped out in 8 grade bread business gave me a chance to be upper middle class something I never was. Let me know bro I can give you the perspective of a company man.
