Thank you for the response, but do mandolin truss rods work?@@MikeHawkey
@MikeHawkey11 күн бұрын
@@bluecheesedude19 though Ive not personally used, i see no reason why not. A mandolin neck is under more stress than my example here as its doubled up on strings. I think they are generally one way adjustment (?) but should still be fine! - i have built other 4 string units without a truss (but a heavier carve neck) without issue also. Good luck with build!

How do the metal strings work with a neck that has no truss rod? Thx
@MikeHawkey28 күн бұрын
@@gasolinenfire if you build a neck strong enough and use light gauge strings I’ve found they are fine personally. There have been many steel stringed guitars without a truss over the years. This said, for piece of mind a truss is not a lot more work to add and I use in many bigger builds - but I usually don’t bother for shorter ukulele scale lengths.

@@MikeHawkey great! I wanted to build something small for a little 2 year old kid, guitar is too big but I don't like ukuleles and nylon strings at all. Never done anything acoustic. Think there is a tiny electric firebird uke coming soon! Thanks for the inspiration

Nice but how do you cut the neck cavity?
@MikeHawkey2 ай бұрын
@@mdiqbal409 thanks. I typically make a mdf template and use a router bit - first drilling out excess wood to save router life. Its possible to do by hand with chisel etc if very handy with tools. To give some neck angle can angle the mdf template, or just go old school fender and put a bit of card in the bottom as a shim.

It would be extremely difficult to build this without knowing the dimentions. Is there some place to find them???
@MikeHawkey3 ай бұрын
Sorry, i dont have any measurements for this one - being non fretted you really can choose any scale length you like. Perhaps eye it similar to a guitar. That said, are some nice lapsteel plans out there that ideas could be taken from. This could help: www.cigarboxguitar.com/make-a-2x4-lap-steel-guitar-easy-project/
@rebeccaabraham86523 ай бұрын
I've been thinking of making a hollow-body 'Breadwinner' using these techniques - so that was quite interesting. However - that saddle belongs on something with a radiused fretboard - and you put it in reversed; the compensation is absolutely wrong!
@MikeHawkey3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Dont recall now if the board was radiused or not (50/50 with builds in that regard)- im sure I showed in the video which way I went on this…, but replacement saddle and easy sort - i would have thrown on what i had in parts bin - good spot re which way. My preference is simpler traditional non compensated ones usually vs these small compensation ones.

A co called Risa makes a line of them with nylon strings and a high quality piezo pick up. Made in Germany I believe, very well built (not cheap) and sound amazing amped and with effects. I have one and love it but difficult to tune and you definitely have to adjust to no headstock. But it’s the best set up instrument I own.

It sounds like the sound is struck inside... But well, I'm just wondering, I still didn't try it... but by the way, super nice job !

Thanks & nice one on the builds. Its all experimental aye! - sound hole could make it project a little more, but is more than loud enough for around the family haha. Also, potentially a little more tinny/distorted without a hole. I have put holes in some of my rectangle tin builds.
