Great video, Jori! For the first decade or so of playing, I played the tap-drag-style birl because that's what my first teacher taught me. I also had some lessons with Allan MacDonald during that time, and I noticed he played the birl very differently, but I could never figure it out either. (Initially, I thought he did a double-tap, because that's what it looked like viewed from head-on, but I suspect it was more of a double-sweep. In any case, I've only seen one or two other great pipers who played it that way. I actually had Jim McGillivray's "Rhythmic Fingerwork" book as well, and I briefly tried to learn the "7" from it, but I wasn't doing it correctly. It got to the point where birls became a major psychological block for me as a player, and I basically resigned myself to thinking that I would never play birls well--playing them cleanly from bottom-hand notes was almost impossible--and, consequently, I would never play at the high standard I aspired to, period. Despite having the great fortune of studying with a few world-class players over the years, none of them brought it up when listening to me play, and I foolishly never thought to ask for help. Perhaps I could have saved myself years of frustration... It wasn't until the advent of KZbin that I happened totally by chance to stumble on a video similar to this one (can't remember the piper's name now... Someone up in Nova Scotia, I think). I immediately picked up my chanter, played the seven correctly, and I couldn't believe it! I started playing through tunes that had frustrated me for years, and the birls practically played themselves. It was as if an enormous physical and psychological block had just suddenly lifted. For any beginners watching this, what Jori's talking about here is the real deal. Watch this video a bunch of times, start slow, get it 100% clean on the chanter first before trying on the pipes, and I guarantee you will be amazed.

Can I use the pressure gauge with German bagpipes? I have a feeling the drone air exit holes have a different diameter. Maybe it can be ordered with a cone shaped attachment?

Great video. I play the Bannatyne Hybrid bag in Medium size. This fits me ok, but I will try a smaller bag next time. The only result you get by playing a larger bag, is that it takes more air and longer time to fill the bag before you can start to play. So bigger isnt always better.

What about learning the birl wrong? I can no longer play a birl because I learned it wrong and subsequently played it that way for the duration. It was such a wrongly performed strike that I can no longer play one because my form was wrong. Now my only choice is to learn the right way of playing it and my little finger can barely move.

If you don't have a store locally to help you when you have an issue with your pipes does it make sense to opt for sticks only then build it yourself to fully understand how everything fits. My logic being you will understand how to troubleshoot issues... Am i wrong?

@@bagpipelessons Popular Highland Bagpipe companies. As someone looking to buy one, I am overwhelmed with choices. I understand the basic proc/con of wood vrs plastic but I wonder how the sounds of a HG Hardie X model vs a Naill differ for example. Or do they mostly sound the same, just small differences? Why would someone choose one over the other? I do understand there are lower costs vs higher. As someone who played guitar fo many years, I could tell you why you want X guitar or amp over another and mostly its sound or similar reasons.

To my knowledge, no one has ever used bamboo for bagpipe drone reeds. Cane drone reeds (like chanter reeds) are all made from a single species of grass, native to the Mediterranean, known as Arundo donax. Nice video though😊

Yes! Thanks for helping clarify this point. Cane is in the grass family and not bamboo, though they are similar in appearance superficially.

I don’t have to take my case off to use my InTune Mic. Some thicker cases might require you to either take the case off OR there’s a simple inexpensive item called a plug expander. It allows you to plug in your mic with your case still on!

I’m learning this one at the moment. It feels really rushed as a 4/4 and loads better as a 5/4.

Hi! I have a scratchy sound when I play my high G and A… How would I get rid of that?

I got a Tone Protector. To be honest, I was wondering just what difference this would make. To my surprise, the Tone Protector really makes a huge difference! The reed stays in tune, is easier to play and overall makes playing more fun. So glad I got one.

Great video and I got a lot out of it. I need the ladder for marking and tracking progress and motovation. Need the master class to refresh and again my knowledge of movements and timing. And the light touch and least amount of finger movement are something I need to keep aware of. All around great video!

I’ve got an old wood chanter that came with my pipes. I’d love to use it for solo gigs, but low A is tuning around 440hz (my Maccallums poly is 485hz) and even if I move the reed right down in the seat low A is still too low but then the top hand goes too high. 😢 I really want to play it.

Older chanters aren’t set up to play at the higher pitch of today. You are right: when you sink the reed, the top hand gets too sharp. That’s why modern chanters make it so much easier to play a higher pitch.

Jori, I wish I had access to the knowledge and products you are offering when I started to learn this most beautiful instrument in 1978. Now I am old and have stopped playing in competitive bands as of last year. Access to your videos is keeping me going. I will stay tuned to your channel (pun intended) and I am vastly impressed by the products you offer which have equally enhanced the quality of piping in the world. Thanks!

Great idea! I have used ChatGPT asking about computer questions, opinionated, questions and bagpipe music questions. Some of these were questions I already knew the answer to others, in the bagpipe arena I have no idea if the info was completely wrong. Great way to spearhead the effort and continue to bring the bagpipes out of the dark ages.

Very good vidéo.I just want to add some historic details. The crunluath you play from Low G is the " Cameron style" héritage with only one Low G in the mouvement.,Same for the light D throw witch is also a Cameron style. The heavy D throw is " Mac Pherson" style of playing. But a crunluath from Low G can be made in the Mac Pherson style , with the second Low G .In that case the D gracenote is on Low G instead on Low A. In the A Mach on D ,one can do an heavy D throw into the mouvement. In that case you play in the Mac Pherson style Cheers.
