What drone reeds do you recommend that come tuned ready to play

Great video!!! I play penny whistles, mostly Irish, some Scottish tunes. I have a decent practice chanter and a set of beginner highland pipes that have a leaky bag. Have not been working on pipes. Suddenly havse a great desire to play bombarde. Power and presence of pipes, but fewer moving parts (I have shoulder issues plus little time for learning mechanics of pipes). Have you heard of anyone performing with a regular bagpipe chanter without bag and drones?

Where do you slow down on a Pibroch measure? Do you slow down on a singling measure?? They teach people only to slow down at the end of a doubling measure when they are going into a singling, plus where exactly do you slow down?? 1 bar or 2 bars? Can you take time to explain please ? In a way a beginner can understand

Hi I'm a novice at playing the GHB. I wonder what you think about the following situation: I found a reed and a position of the reed in the chanter which makes all notes almost perfectly correct. Since I will have to play at a 440 together with other instruments only problem that remains is that it tunes in at about 445 Hertz at 24 degrees Celsius. Now my plan is: keep that reed to play at cool temperatures with a minimum amount of tape and get one of the other reeds to play a bit lower so it fits 440 at 20 22 24 degrees. Perhaps even a third reed and reed position for 28 degrees. Is this a reasonable thing to do? I did play some continental bagpipes before and so this procedure of tuning the pipes this way or that way before every concert is kind of repulsive to me because the main reason for detuning the pipes anew is temperature, anyway. I don't want to tune the pipes drastically everytime just because of the weather. [...and oftentimes I will not have the possibility of tuning in such a way because of limited backstage space and not annoying my bandmates 😅]

That is a very creative solution which I haven't heard of before! What chanter and drone reeds are you using to get a pitch of A=440?

@bagpipelessons Mc Callum polypenco key of A - Sheperd Bb reeds. I play it plugged into a german 'Marktsack' which has a drone reed made by Arno Eckhardt, he built a few dozend german 'Marktsack' pseudo-medieval pipes around 2010. It has only one bass drone but it is not stopped like on the GHB so it is quite noisy which makes partly up for the lack of tenor drones.

This video was awesome, you just helped me so much with this. Could you please maybe consider in the future explaining how pibrock is put together… I’m just learning and I’m on my own and I’m trying to figure out how variations work with the ground. Etc… I love the style of play, but nobody in the two bands that I play with know how to play pibrock. .. only Ceol beg. I watch all your videos and I study everything you do to the letter. You are a huge inspiration to me.

If you poke a reed too open, can you use a clamp or something to partially close it again? Or is it one way only?
@bagpipelessons
@bagpipelessons 27 күн бұрын
Great question! If the reed is too hard, either because it just came that way or you poked it too much, you can close it down with an elastic chanter reed bridle. I talk about that in the video. I have them here on my shop, too, as part of my Precision Tuning Tool Kit: bagpipelessons.com/toolkit Thanks and please let me know if you have more questions!

What a fantastic video! Thank you so much. I'm still confused as to why there are no A chanters? Is it because the drones with extenders still wouldn't reach the key of A, or they would be ridiculously long...? Loved the clip at the end showing the different chanters one after the other. GREAT STUFF!

As a recommendation…You’ve done videos better than this describing your new chanter, and they made me excited to purchase one as I am just starting out in my bagpipe journey. I would keep pushing those videos. This short made it look like you were reading off a script and I didn’t feel your excitement watching this one as I felt watching those other uploads. Still wishing you the best success, and thank you for all you’ve done in the past with all your other inventions and contributions!

Spot on sound. A great video as usual, but I noticed that you keep High A well low of the mark. I keep my High A a bit low so I can blow slightly up to what I feel is my perfect note not too high but your's made me fell it was too low. Individual taste?
@bagpipelessons
@bagpipelessons Ай бұрын
Great question! I should mentioned that... yes I like High A to be flatter than what the tuner shows as "in tune." The reason for this is that when you make it perfectly in tune it blends into the drones too perfectly and the High A disappears. When it's slightly flat, it projects more nicely and you can hear the lovely texture of the High A. Most top pipers love their High A when it really sings out, and to do that make it very slightly flat.

You start to adjust the tape on the chanter after just 2 minuttes of playing. At that time the chanter reed or the drone reeds are not even starting to warm up,- is this to make it sound better from the start? And then just follow the temperature of the reeds during the tuning process?
@bagpipelessons
@bagpipelessons Ай бұрын
Yes. You can play longer to let things warm up, but in this case I was pretty much starting from scratch with this reed in this chanter so there was a lot to do and so I just got things started. Another video I could make would be how to tune when your pipes are already set up and pretty well tuned from your previous practice session. In that scenario, it would sound a lot better "right out of the box" and I would definitely warm the pipes up more before adjusting tape. Great question! Thanks @hfrank07
