I'm from Colombia. Wicked is not doing well here because this country is not a musical target. I didn't know about Wicked until I saw Glee or noticed Ari's love for the musical (I know about it as a fan of hers). The live show never made it up here; I guess the same happened in many more countries. So maybe that's what's happening. The musical might be a huge thing in US, but there are so many more countries that are not involve with the musical culture.

I agree the international numbers are very strange, I’m in the U.K. and it’s doing amazing business over here, I just guess it’s not catching on in other countries. The one market I do think it will do very well is Japan, but bizarrely they’re not getting it until March! It’s certainly not over yet though, I do think it will play well all over Christmas, and like you say sing along screenings will encourage repeat viewings. At the end of the day half a billion in three weeks is still a massive success 🤷🏻♂️

Jon Chu better get an Oscar nom. The man did a phenomenal job. As of now, I’m really hoping Ari sweeps every awards show, unless something comes out and really blows me away. She’s just so damn good. I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.

It's because some countries have banned it due to the thinking that its promoting LGBTQ and the politics message, from what has been reported about it. It's stooped but its like what happened with star wars certain story lines were to much for the countries, and since this is a female driven musical movie, you can bet that the countries that think women shouldn't be allowed to talk let alone sing, aren't going to allow this to creep into their countries. There is reason that in Sex and the City 2 they added that joke about a secret reading society of Arabian women in Abudabi have to hide the fact that they dress like the sex and the city girls under their clothes, and have to hide the fact that they secretly read the books so that the men who run those countries don't find out.

I honestly don't get why Wicked is not performing as well outside of the US. My first thought is that the songs are in English, so there's probably that language barrier. But then why would a family movie that sucks like Moana 2 perform so well overseas? I don't get it. Perhaps they're buying into the misinformation that the witches are gay? It's already caused Wicked to be banned in Kuwait, after all. Anybody who thinks the witches are gay either haven't seen the film or are some lgbt+ person reading way too much into their friendship and wishing it were so.
@chris.thespookygay9 күн бұрын
Well unfortunately Disney just has that pull and Moana is a TRUE family film! I do think the runtime of Wicked Part 1 has something to do with it as well. Both Parts totally will make over a billion and I will be happy with that! 😊 Also, when the sing a long version is released…I do feel like it’s box office will increase!

Hi Chris. It has been touching going through the build up to Wicked to this review with you. I love folks who are so willing to share your thoughts and honest theater. I don't know if you saw the clip of Cynthia doing The Color Purple on Broadway, but I think it will be powerful for you. Like Elphabah, Ceelie has had some horrendous things done to her in the play. She had to learn that she had been lied to, she is not ugly, and she has power. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHzXd5mnntOgjdEsi=mZhZbu4YSwMzfA3S Also, there is a guy named Terrell who interviewed Cynthia a few years back. She gives an extraordinary interview. She also plays a game where she sand songs in many genre acapella. It's long but she's amazingly interesting. Thanks again and enjoy clips.

First, before I even go any further, I want to say, I 100% agree that I knew within 10 seconds of the first song starting we were in for the same treat you described. The increased orchestrations you can only get with a movie soundtrack IMMEDIATELY hitting was just....amazing. I've seen it twice, both in 3D (if you haven't see it in 3D, you should, as soon as No One Mourns starts you will understand the movie was made for 3D. It's amazing) and a couple of takeaways I have. 1. The movie pretty overtly says Glinda is STILL not magical by the time Elphaba "dies". Her bubble is not magic, it's mechanical, there's a literal button to raise the bubble, and she pops it with the sharp tip of her wand. She's using Wizard tech to fly. 2. Morrible's change to a simple professor and the addition of the separate headmistress character (in addition to hopefully giving us Keala Settle singing in Part 2. Hiring her for a musical and not having her sing is like hiring Shaq to star in your basketball movie and then making him the photographer) to me SCREAMS about the Wizard's influence. She's the only magical person outside of Elphaba we see the ENTIRE show, and she doesn't even take students every semester? How would that fly? Unless the Wizard keeps her in the position to look for people who were actually magical, someone who might be able to read the Grimmerie. "You're the one the Wizard has been waiting for" well what better way to know that than to have her in a position to sort through sorcery students at Shiz? 3. Every single change was additive, and made the experience better. G and E actually talking to each other at the beginning of What Is This Feeling was genius. The extended dance break for Ozdust and the entire Dancing Through Life sequence was just a visual wonder to watch. The first time I watched it, I went into the movie completely blind, being a fan of the musical, but not even having seen the trailer for the movie, and I didn't know most of the movie was practical, so the first time it was visually stunning, and the second time I watched it, it was TECHNICALLY stunning, knowing it was all real, after watching behind the scenes obsessively after seeing it first time. 4. Ariana is gonna get Best Supporting. Cynthia will probably be nominated for Best Actress for Act 2, which is where her dramatic acting is really done. If you had told me 2 months ago I'd be sitting here saying Ariana Grande-Butera was gonna win a damn Oscar for Wicked, I'd have asked what you were smoking, and then asked for some to smoke with you. But she's got it, she stole the show. No disrespect to Cynthia, she was pitch perfect and amazing, but her range didn't have to be that wide for Act 1, given her turn happens only in the last song. 5. Michelle Yeoh is a HUGE acting get. Not a huge singing get, but a HUGE acting get. Only (current) Oscar winner in the cast. I loved how dark the character was, and her reading of the announcement of Elphie's wickedness gave me CHILLS. 6. IDK how they're gonna do Nessa's enchanted slippers, but I loved Marissa in the role regardless.

Okay, a little treasure hunt: Search info below on Google Earth and it will take you to the massive UK field where the _Wicked_ sets were built. The satellite imagery shows nothing, but there is a 360-degree blue photomarker _over the Turf Supply building_ that will show you Munchkinland under construction. SEARCH (You can copy/paste): *Turf Supply near Ivinghoe, Leighton Buzzard, UK.* Have fun! ❤ Also, if you haven't seen them yet, there are a series of drone videos here on KZbin that fly over Munchkinland while they're filming "No One Mourns the Wicked," Ariana Grande and all in her giant pink glory! At least one of these videos also show the Shiz University set under construction. This will give you an idea of just how incredibly massive these sets were, what they look like from outside, and other great secrets of making the movie! Note the loading dock area in the Shiz set: _Even the waterway was built and flooded!_ One final tidbit of trivia: When the production on _Wicked_ was forced to shut down because of the industry strikes, the Munchkinland, Shiz, and Emerald City sets were actually abandoned and remained there for NEARLY SIX MONTHS with several weeks yet to film. Eventually, the film sent demolition crews to tear down the sets without production returning, so they must have finished elsewhere. How badly do you wish you'd known THAT? (CHRIS, FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS ANYWAY YOU LIKE!)

I live fairly close to the warner bros Harry Potter studio tour in England where they house and display many of the original sets of the harry potter movies and it's always so surreal walking round there.
