I have never divided my one dahlia plant that I grow in a large pot. I just overwinter it in the basement as is after I cut off the dead foliage. This year I came here to learn how to divide since I had way too many stems come up this year. So what I learned here is to do what I have been doing as far as storage, then divide in February. Feeling way less apprehension about dividing them. Thanks.

Great video. Very helpful. What time of year is this best to do? I've pulled mine out and washed them off, they have been drying in my garage for a couple of weeks before winter storage. Can I do it now or is it best to wait till Spring?

I became a dahlia fan after visiting Monet’s garden outside of Paris. I think this video will be really helpful with saving the dahlias that I planted this spring.

I missed dividing the tubers this season, however I successfully divided them up to four inches in height. I had to cut them while still in the ground the lifted them out and transplanted them in other parts of the garden. The weather has been super with spring showers which helped establish them before the summer heat. I love scattering them in sunny parts of the garden. I'm in my seventies and have always been around them, but despite that they never appealed to me. My mum and her generation adored them now I've gone madly in love with them.

I live in a very dry climate with hard packed clay ( good soil in its own right ) not a humidity area, your hacks are not appropriate for here

So my dahlias are huge and i need to divide them just because of how hard they are getting to dig up in the fall (I leave in New England) Are there any tubers that are unnecessary for the dahlia that are good to trim and toss or are they all important unless dead or dried up?

This is an excellent video. Concise, well edited and NO annoying background music!!! I appreciate the more dense tight clusters. I was a bit intimidated by those than the longer floppy tuber ones... I will have more confidence in the spring to divide these... Thanks

Quick question.. is it important to watch for eyes if I am going to partially split tubers in the fall but do more splitting in spring? I am in The Boston Area.

Thank you for this video! I was so overwhelmed to divide tubers for the first time but you made it seem doable. I’ve just finished dividing my tubers for the first time and I feel like I’ve done a fairly decent job for a novice!!

why divide dahlia tubers at all? Won't they make bigger plants if not divided?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge . Only one comment, it was difficult to see what criteria you were using to divide the tubers.

I got some dahlia tubers this past spring and threw them in the end of my tomato beds. Wow, no tomatos but the dahlia blooms are up to are 8 inches across, and gorgeous deep reddish purple color. They are mop headed, and don’t absorb water to stay hydrated so well once they are cut and in a vase. Not sure what that means! In mid October the flowers are going strong. I need to know everything!

I am 73 but not an experienced gardener. We have brought in our geraniums for years but I never had dahlias, this spring I planted them but the deer loved them. I would wait for the bud to bloom only to find it eaten. I finally got a product to "discourage" the deer, but too late for any blooms. If I dig them up and bring them in as house plants, should I cut the stems down?

Hi ! I have just watched some of your Dahlia videos. I live in Northern Ireland and planted dahlias in containers but they didn’t flower 😢 well I had a few very tiny flowers. Any advice? We did have a very wet and sunless summer!!(typical Irish weather!😂) Grateful for your expert advice
