I like that you brought up rogues from Ragnarok Online because they are also a copycat class that feels awful to play until late into the game when you can finally access their full kit. Phantoms having an entire skill slot locked into cross surge sucks but its better than having your copied skills be forcibly overwritten whenever a monster decides to attack you.

A lot of people suggest removing Phantom's skill steal and just balance him like a regular regular class, but I like your idea just making the damage boosting baked in so there's more options. I'd love for there to be more skill slots as well, and maybe an active skillswap where you hold a skillswap button and press one of your impeccable memory skills, it brings up a directional menu similar to Xenon and swaps that skill

I was hoping they make the title “Master Thief” Phantom alive again, instead of stealing pesky 1/2/3/4/H skills and segment them, combine them into a skill and make it that they can only steal 1 skills to use and a loadout of maybe 20? or maybe lesser, idk(up to balance team) and make it that we “steal” the core skills like Combo(again, yes please) or The dmg for party(i dont rmb precisely) from Bishop, living up to their name “MASTER” Thief, like why are we stealing first job skill???? It’s like saying: Me: I am Master Thief Phantom Them: What can you do that makes you special? Me: I can Dark Sight Like what a ridiculous thing to say 🤦‍♂️ What are we even Master about? I tried cannonmaster when I returned to Ms after years. Class felt awful ended up quiting again for a year then finally returning. Being grounded in maplestory feels awful.

A little late to the party (man this event was fun, I miss it) but the best without a doubt was Pirate. Ignore his normal attack, get mechanic's missiles and captain's rapid fire to max level and enjoy the easiest run of your life (maybe it'll come back one day and this information will be useful).

Great video! And I think why they wont let Phantom steal skills that increase lines is because that becomes hell to balance with their other stolen skills. For example if they could steal shadow partner and Cannoneer's Buskshot they would start dealing 4x lines of the damage. Would be fun though ahah

The unfortunate reality is when a class in an MMO is copying skills from other classes in the specific way that Phantom does it ends up being something that needs to be balanced around regardless of what form it takes. If they build in final damage and prevented from stealing final damage, as you suggest, it’s also very likely it would lose some of its defensive utility precisely because the more valuable thing to do will be having a bunch of I-frames. There were points in the past where the class was really really strong due to scale combos it had access to. And as cool as that is that also kind of tells you that at a base level whenever they adjust other classes that are relevant for skills dealing they have to adjust them with the consideration of phantom being able to combine some of their abilities. So that would also mean extra time spent developing skills for all of the explore classes to make sure they are adequately strong but also not necessarily abusable in conjunction with each other. I think the more realistic solution is to do away with stealing entirely. You can’t even reasonably steal buffs from bosses anymore.

Glad to see you're still making maple videos. And I too love phantom no matter how bad they need a rework.

Recently came back to maple and found out how weak it is now saddens me, I LOVE his lore, being a hot thief reminds me of the thief from detective Conan anime. I used to play it till lvl80 when it first came out(don’t own a pc or laptop back then so I only play on my cousins’ when they are not)

They either have to fully lean into the stealing motif and let us steal everything and give phantom big damage buffs or rework it like AB and lean into the card/gambit theme

Phantom needs a total rework, there really is no way to salvage phantom as they currently are.

Rath brotha, I think u got so much potential to be a bigger content creator. Maplestory doesn’t have that big of a community compared to other platforms. I think your channel would explode if you branch out!

As a Phantom main. The reason I’m sticking with him is because I’m a big fan of his lore. It really sucks that he got butchered over the years because of skill stealing restrictions. Fun fact: Phantom has been shown to steal a skill from Luminous (though it was a minor light spell) during the Heroes of Maple blockbuster. This implies that Phantom can canonically steal more than just Explorer skills. Do what you will with that information. Imo, being able to only steal explorer skills is more of gameplay balancing than a cap on his canonical abilities cuz I’d like to believe he would mimic Luminous’ light magic just to piss him off.

Unfortunately, the main reason why most of us loved phantom in the first place is the reason why the class is held back from its full potential. Our 2nd mastery core (6th Job) made stealing offensive skills useless which consequently made a pair of tri-nodes (5th Job) useless, basically making it harder to obtain the nodes you actually need (that is going to be changed in the upcoming Winter Patch). Nexon is basically "fixing" the class through 6th Job instead of actually "improving" it. Both mastery cores should be the actual original skills imo. The reality is the stealing system needs to go, and phantom needs a full remaster. It's own identity to be at the par of everyone else. I am a phantom main and it makes me sad to say this, but we need to let it go. It could have been so good if implemented properly, but it is what it is. Phantom should had been first over Aran/Shade. OUR TIME WILL COME !!!!

As always, great video!!! I completely agree with you. For me its crazy that they revamped the heros and just didnt touch phantom... I love the idea behind the class. The execution though... not so much. But we can always inhale a bit of copium hoping that they change it! :D

For me, Phantom's kit is very outdated and only got worse after the Explorers rework, which further limited the options for the class (instead of improving them). It's one of the classes that has been begging for rework for years. They should allow stealing for all classes from Maple World, and not just Explorers, because this limitation makes no sense at all. The second is to prohibit stealing any offensive buffs, and allow all defensive or utility buffs/training tools, such as i-frames, teleports, hs, summons and everything else. Implement the buffs in the character's base kit and change the offensive skills to be better than the stolen options, so that people only use the utility skills. I hope they rework it soon, it's one of the coolest classes in the game and one of the most hyped that has ever been released. Phantom deserves love.

I think Phantoms should be given FD (or whatever stat that is important nowadays) for each DIFFERENT class skill they steal and as for the clone ability, I can see it as being either a set up tool a la Shadower decoy ability or a regular clone skill; personally i want a decoy skill that actually attacks with the second slot skills you steal and it cycles through them one after another. Or, heck, give phantom a clone ability for every job and they attack with the skills for that job. But this all hinges on whether or not they stick with the card/cane motif or the skill stealing motif.

Allthough I do not at all agree with your sentiment on stealing skills and I rather see it scrapped in a rework, I loved the vid. Any coverage on the class is great imo haha. :)

If it wasn't for the Aran and Shade remaster I would have held hope for the phantom one.
