My daughter (4th grade) wants to learn bass. We just rented a 1/2 size acoustic from a local shop, but it is a lot to lug around. I've been wondering if I could pick her up an upright electric. I don't know how the music teacher would feel about it, but would it be worthwhile to learn and practice on at home?

Im not an expert by any means, so I'd maybe wait for someone else to respond as well, but I figured I'd share my two cents! I guess it really depends on what she wants to do honestly. I started with an acoustic upright when I was in 6th grade so I totally understand the struggle lugging them around, even the half size are no joke. I will say there are a few differences between an acoustic and these electric ones- they feel kinda different to play, acoustics needing more muscle to fret with. The sound is different too, an electric will never truly match acoustic. But it's very nice on its own as well especially if you are going to be playing at other places simply for easier travel and storage. These days electric definitely is cheaper than getting an acoustic, if price was also a consideration. I think a lot really depends on what she wants to do relatively long term. If she wants to play in a school jazz band or some sort of orchestra she would benefit from a traditional acoustic. If she ever wants to learn to play more varied genres of music, I'd recommend getting an electric bass guitar. Heck if she's super passionate about bass in general she'd probably need one! It's not a fast or easy adjustment switching from upright to the guitar style. If you got the money to spend on an electric I'd say go for it just for all of the practical benefits it has as she continues to learn and if she wants to keep playing for school and other related things. Simply considering how much easier it'll be on both of you with traveling and such. My mom complains to this day about my old bass. Again it kinda really depends on what sort of music she wants to play, as at some point I strongly encourage eventually branching out to the bass guitar. Those are miles easier to transport and store as well, and come in short scale versions that would be easier for a kid to start with.

Very clever arrangement! It’s a Fleck composition that’s a deceptively difficult tune to cover, particularly on solo bass guitar!! Very nice..👍🏻
