The game's difficulty is definitely overstated after the tutorial/first dungeon, it's only that hard at the very beginning due to the lack of options with how you tackle battles. Once you've beat the first 2 bosses and the map opens, it eases up significantly and becomes a much smoother experience. The game also offers an easier difficulty if you want to play on that. I may seem biased but I really enjoyed my time playing, If you've already got the game I don't see a reason why you shouldn't try it out when you've got some free time. Just remember that the start is the hardest part and you can save anywhere so you should do so often.

It is fun BECAUSE of the difficulty

I thought the same thing, but after abusing the Minotaur with it's weakness you feel like you can do anything. You can't, you'll die again, but then you'll decimate more than you did last time. That cycle will continue until you kill a god of your choice*

It’s actually on the easier side compared to past SMT games. The first dungeon is hard but after that you really get a better idea of how to survive. Not to mention unlike past games when you die you don’t lose hours of progress. In 4 you can save anywhere and use play coins/ macca to revive yourself. I’d say it’s probably the best place to start for a newcomer
