The name change was because people were offended this non-japanese company would use a japanese name for the coat. This was probably right after George Floyd/BLM movement.

Interesting. I've never heard of this before! My question is why separate the threads only to put them together again? I'm relatively new to embroidery, I usually just split the 6 into two groups of 3 strands...
@PinkHollybushDesignsАй бұрын
You will get much better and fuller coverage. In smocking we want the threads to lie side by side. They need to be separated and smoothed to do that. The same is true in embroidery. I was originally taught the technique through a correspondence course I took through the Embroiders Guild of America.

Hi Lisa I am currently making your self binding knit baby blanket pattern for my 2 grandsons - also going to daycare needing a sleep blanket. The jersey top fabric tucked under the self binding is curling - despite pressing. Could you please suggest what to do? Also for best washing results, did you decide (later) to stitch the two layers together? Thank you in advance. Marilyn (from Australia)
@PinkHollybushDesignsАй бұрын
Hi Marilyn, I am glad you are trying the blanket. If you have a serger, I would serge the edges of the jersey to help them lie flat. The only stitching I did was the blanket stitch on the inside edge and it was fine. If you find it is bumpy, you could run the blanket stitch around the outside edge as well. That would catch the jersey and keep it flat. I hope that helps!

I have a question. In the video you measured your insert to be 2.5”, and then you used your ruler to cut out a 3” section from the middle of the pattern. Why 3”?
@PinkHollybushDesigns3 ай бұрын
I just watched the video again and I cut a 2 1/2” section from my pattern. I’m not sure where you are getting the 3” from.

I doublechecked and you are correct and very observant! I think when I was filming the tutorial I wasn’t sure if I had included the seam allowance’s so I cut at 3”. When I edited the video I had.included the seam allowances. The verbal directions are correct.

Hi, thank you for this video, some really useful hints and tips and a lovely finished coat 😊 I’m based in the UK, and going to start on a Nova coat very soon using a boiled wool. I was wondering what interfacing you used? It looks like quite a heavy weight one. Thanks, Pippa
@PinkHollybushDesigns4 ай бұрын
Hi Pippa, Thank you for your kind comments about the video and my coat. I used a woven fusible weft interfacing that I purchased from Mood Fabrics. Unfortunately, Mood doesn't provide the brand name. You can find it here: www.moodfabrics.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=weft%20fusible%20interfacing%20single-sided. You are correct - it is substantial. This interfacing was what was called for by the Clare Coat pattern that I made a year or two before and so I used what I had left over from that. I hope you enjoy making the Nova coat and that it turns out beautifully!

Thank you for the great video! I am worried about drying my knit fabric, but it will inevitably be thrown in the dryer at some point. The fabric store didn’t have the fiber information, so I’m actually very concerned about the potential shrinkage, but hopefully it’ll be okay!
@PinkHollybushDesigns4 ай бұрын
If it will end up in the dryer, better to find out before you sew a whole garment! I would wash and dry it. Good luck!

But not all smocking is elastic. I fact, there is a definition that devides shirring with smocking in that smocking is not elastic!? - A very detailed "talk" video and very clearly informative. Thankyou. 😊
@PinkHollybushDesigns4 ай бұрын
Hi Carolleen, I have a video on the difference between hand smocking and shirring. They are 2 very different techniques. All hand smocking is elastic if you don’t add something that prevents it from stretching. Adding piping or a neck binding stops it from stretching.

Hello! Thank you for your videos I just bought a Sally Stanley second hand and I noticed it has dark spots kind of dark brown, what do you think is this? Thank you!
@PinkHollybushDesigns4 ай бұрын
It can simply be the brass discoloring over time. Put a scrap of white fabric through the pleater and if nothing is transferring to the fabric, I wouldn’t worry about it.

@PinkHollybushDesigns5 ай бұрын
It could just be the brass changing color. Mine has some dark spots and it isn’t a problem at all. I would give it a good cleaning and then put some scrap fabric through it to catch any cleaning residue and give it a whirl!

Thank you for such helpful tips! I had to pleat my knit 4x until I was happy with the pleats. I chose an unhelpful knit with too much drape and your advice with marking the lines was sooo helpful. In the end, I also had to add in half pleater spaces in my pleater to rein in my unwieldy knit and then very careful take it off the needles. Finally smocking now with a basic geometric pattern.
@PinkHollybushDesigns5 ай бұрын
Hi Katie, I hope it turns out well and thank you for your kind words. I hesitate to encourage people to spend money and do want them to sew from what they have, but there is a huge difference between a great quality knit and an unhelpful one. A great knit does make the process so much easier!

Hand pleating is so simple, I thought my friend who spent $200 for a mechanical pleater was nuts. You can just hand sew rows of even basting stitches, pull the fabric together to form the pleats, and make sure the basting threads are knotted on each side to keep the pleats in place. The basting thread are pulled out after the embroidering is done. So, $200 to run basting stitches that aren't even part of the final project boggles me. But I like the idea of finding a used pleater. It could be fun to have one, even though sewers have gone centuries without them. I can see the practicality for professional smockers.

Greetings from New Zealand Lisa. Ive just recently picked up a pleating machine and while tuning into your videos I was interested in this one. With the prolific amount of polyester clothing coming into the clothing market Im finding it much harder to source cotton materials. I have been using recycled materials as often as possible from second hand clothing stores . I have a feeling that flannel, (we call it wincyette here) will definitely be my big go to for now. It’s the middle of winter here so last summer I made up lined flannel dresses made from old sheets. They are wearing very well. Better than I anticipated. And they go through the drier coming out soft and warm

What kind of stabilizer? Just any wash or tear away?
@PinkHollybushDesigns8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. I should have been more clear. When I said stabilize, I didn't mean sewing with stabilizer but stabilizing the area that you are sewing. So I would use interfacing or paper backed fusible on the hem and glue baste it to anchor the neckline before I sewed it. I hope that helps.
