If you go out alone, a whinch IS the ultimate safetynet, 98% of the times a shovel and recovery boards will do the trick, but I've been buried by myself in the middle of the desert with all the family on board while night falls...and I only got out whinching like crazy..its a one-of but still. Also, as you get more into "community style" off-road camping, I believe there has to be at least 1 whinch around for the group, sometimes a rope wont cut it due to space or terrain, sometimes a dead-engine rig will be impossible to move without gearing help.
@AutomobrosКүн бұрын
Couldn't agree more with this! Excellent callout about the "community winch". Just having one in the group can go a LONG way!

To the Aussies: I am South African, in rather similar conditions. Much of the overlanding hype is just that. Remember when we only had 2wd Holdens, Chevs, Opels and Fords? We overlanded back then, me since the 1960's, my late father from the 1930's, my grandparents from the late 1800's. Nobody had 4x4's or these silly "builds.". It really is the Hummer syndrome all over again, for men that feel inadequate in another area altogether.

Loved the video. I am a weekend warrior. There is 100% looking cool vs real use. Its cool to see the differences in everyones goals and needs. The only thing i do have a need for you mentioned is fuel. It's not necessarily a need but very convenient. It may make the diffference from fishing a stream and hitting a new rural road on a limited time weekend vs adding an hour to my journey to hit a station to refuel. Super good video. Its all about learning what you actually need and the journey.

I live in the PNW and bought a built out 3rd gen 4Runner about a year ago to get up the mountains to snowboard but it felt slow and heavy. I’ve since removed the winch, lights, skid plates and added little things like poly bushings, end links. Drives a lot better with all that dead weight removed. Took me a while figure that out
@AutomobrosКүн бұрын
That is something we completely forgot to mention! It’s amazing how much better the vehicle can drive when you take off some of the weight that you're just lugging around! "I forgot how good this thing felt on the freeway" was a line I heard from Justin multiple times this year after he pulled most of his gear off of his roof rack 😆

I had taken off most of the stuff on the inside panel to use it! I don't have the mesh bag inside my rear door like yours (didn't know they came with them) so I thought the panel was really helpful keeping things I wanted to grab quickly in one easy to reach place! I have no excuse for the outer panels lol, but it was one of the first things I ever conceptualized and built myself so I'm proud of them! 😂 Watched your 5 worst mods video, and luckily only guilty of 2! Absolutely loved the vid btw

Thanks for sharing; and helping me delineate Needs from Wants. Two helpful points for me are (1) don't be persuaded by Product Advertising to buy a thing, rather, assess a product for its merits, not for its hype, and (2) do what is simple and sufficient (such as your example of tow strap verses winch).

This is probably one of the most reasonable, responsible, and logical videos I've seen on this subject. I see these channels, running a 65K$ right, a 12,000.00$ rooftop camper, another 80K in accessories, and I'm asking myself who has this kind of money. I'm thinking of getting a 2st gen 4runner this winter and doing a nice budget build for some weekend fun. Your tips and advice will help guide me in making some cost saving and smart decisions. Thanks guys.

When the pandemic blew up and people couldn't travel anymore, the overlanding/sailing/camping/self-suficient lifestyle skyrocketed and the social media went crazy. Everyone should have the ultimate setup for camping, overlandind and sailing. And the unaware people spent fortunes buying the latest tech and supplies, that became the standing ground to start the hobbie. It's like starting a new sport that you might not like and buying the top notch equipment, just to show off. Total waste of resources! First of all, start with what you have and then try to upgrade it!
@AutomobrosКүн бұрын
Super good points about the pandemic, that really was ground zero for this taking off how it did! We all got so stir-crazy, and it really seemed like the perfect way to get away from everything and breathe. I think you are right on the money here 😁

The winch I had on my Jeep TJ pulled out a few other rigs, but never my own. D44 rear with ARB, D30 open front, 35's. There was never anything we could not make through. Now have a Colorado 4x4, carry a tow strap and never used it. I think a full size spare is worth it. Lots of racks and hardware is not.

As a weekend camper, self rating 4, much of this is true and many items I buy are out of convenience (awning/heater). Winch because I’m solo. Heavy invest in suspension, AT stock size tires, Boards for leveling and northern winters. RotoPax mount often gets used for the water container to fully put out fires and keep drinking water separate.

Great video....Awesome you guys! Thank you...Just get what you need for what adventure that you decide to go on. True overlanding companies do take advantage of the market that's hot. It's all about making the adventure that you want. Regardless of whatever you veiw it as or what your decision is to upgrade your vehicle or whatever your adventure you go on, will determine what you actually need. I am happy that we have choices and im glad that overlanding companies and 4x4 industries make , engineer gear for us. Truly appreciate it because everyone is a different person and we are going to buy what fits us in our journey and adventure. So there is nothing wrong going all the way out fitting your 4x4 to whatever you want and there's nothing wrong with being less out fitted. It's your choice and it needs to be respected! Its all about the adventure and who cares what someone else thinks. It's just an their opinion, their chioce. No BIG DEAL , just have fun. Great video you guys.😊

The one item people waste too much money on, that they don’t need, is a roof top tent. First, it puts too much weight high up, where you don’t need it. Second, you lose valuable roof rack space, and lastly, leaving a RTT on year round, will kill you MPG.
@Automobros7 күн бұрын
1000% agree on this one. I wouldn't want to do anything that would raise the vehicle's center of gravity that much!

As I sometimes explore alone I'd never not have a winch on my truck. It got me out back this spring during some exploration for the best eclipse spotting spot. Many people I go out with usually don't have a winch. My old truck I didn't get a snorkel until once too many close calls. I also didn't do skid plates until I dented the oil pan and on my new truck may-or-may-not be the cause of my (aluminum) driveshaft break this year but will go with aluminum ones this time round. I haven't sliders on my new truck *yet* but the factory steps have already taken a few hits. As my new truck is more multi-duty I didn't do MT tires and went with RT tires which I'm extremely happy with. What I did learn and applying to me new truck is attempting to keep it as lightweight as possible as the pounds added up quick without realizing it. For me; winch is necessary, skid plate are necessary, sliders are necessary, but you're right, it all comes from experience to know what you do and where you go. Let the experience determine your NEED. I've been there when a truck ran out of fuel from bad planning, especially since we met up at a gas station and will usually now carry a 20L jerry of fuel just in case.

To really breathe life into the notion of “overlanding” you have the following considerations (IMHO): - Are you solo or are the wife and kids coming along ? As the driver, your days are full but are your passengers ready for long days riding with you and maybe not quite as stoked about all that high adventure as you? This might impact how nice a kitchen facility you need, for instance. - Planning, including contingencies, plan B’s, phone calls, updated weather info, general itinerary. As I understand “overlanding” it’s a mega-car camping/road trip adventure over several days involving backroad travel over a wide range of elevations and possibly two or more states . You’re covering distance on dirt roads and seeing faraway places with no freeways or highways in sight for maybe a couple days, honking at various cattle that might block your road. Driving and keeping schedule and reaching target camping area every day will make you want the evening setup to be fa$t and ea$y. Especially if it’s your turn to make dinner for the group. Throwing a tarp and sleeping bag and a couple cardboard boxes into the truck and heading up into your local mountains for a couple nights is something we’ve all done a hundred times on shoestring budgets. “Overlanding” is that, but on major steroids, and covering major distance.

I will say (and I hope people don't have to experience this like I have) that living in my suv (2000 dodge durango) you find that all the extras most "overland" enthusiasts say you need are absolutely unnecessary in most situations when it come to car camping. I have taken this wonderful machine places alot of overloaded jeeps would second guess and I'm running stock. Don't blow your money on pointless things to look cool. Trust me this beaut of a rig looks bad a passing modded jeeps questioning their ability at trailheads. You really don't need all the extra.
