Gar Samuelson was a good drummer.

You could only hear 30% of what he is doing here on the album version. I REALLY wish they produced the drums a lot clearer and more upfront. Dirk is beyond amazing, and the production just mutes him.

i hated blast beats for the longest time. so many drummers couldnt play them tight enough, couldnt pull them off live, or worst of all- they lacked groove and feel. then i heard dirk blasts and now they're my fav thing ever. nobody does it like dirk.

Menza was incredible, but he could never quite play Gar's stuff like Gar could. I doubt Gar could have played Menza's stuff like Menza either. But Dirk? Dirk can do both. It's just a shame he's decades to late to have new material on par with the stuff those guys performed on to cement his own legacy. That isn't to talk down on Megadeth's new material, its about as fantastic as it could possibly be, but simply to acknowledge that the golden era is decades gone and almost no band ever rises to quite the same level again.

These videos make you appreciate the musicianship on those old albums more. The production of 80s Metal albums was so atrocious most of the time that often times great performances were buried in those terrible cloudy, muddy, reverb-drenched mixes. People like to give Metallica shit for the mixing of "... And Justice For All", but that album was pivotal for Metal productions. It's pretty much the fist big Metal album of the 80s that had this dry, super-focused, clear and tight sound where you could hear exactly what everyone's playing ... well, except for the bass player of course. That really was the blueprint for how Metal should sound.

Yknow in the jazz world, it’s called “Swiss triplets” Or yes, flam accents. But the key for me was to practice BOTH in alternating say, 4 bar or 2 bar phrases, and force myself to be able to easily…er…utilize whichever I needed to depending on what drums I was trying to hit while using the feel .! Great video still, and thank you. Btw. I would love to take a lesson with you, Idk how if you’ll ever see this but, thanks either way!!,
