I think that (especially the more stylized form of) karate emphasizes kicks very heavily over hand strikes. I know some styles have their own kind of gi (or dobak if you're using Korean). For example, styles that use throws like Judo like the top to be very thick (I think mine for hapkido/yongmudo was a full 1/8") but styles that don't may have tops no thicker than an ordinary shirt.
