A great piece of railway history captured on film.I visited that station many times as a child in the mid 1950’s with my mother in the hope that we might see a steam engine.I can still recall the excitement of a goods train’s arrival on one of the rare visits after passenger services were discontinued.

I was wondering if there was always a crowd gathered here (it would be unsurprising its great spot!), or was it mainly because of 2:26!! Amazing to see film of it on the mainline

Silver Link was originally going to be preserved by Sir Billy Butlin for his camp in 1962 but the attempt was unsuccessful because the Eastern region wasn’t interested in preserving it.

It didn't turn out fine for the Central Electricity Board (CEGH). The subsequent court case Ffestiniog Railway Co vs CEGB was and still is the second longest court case in British legal History.

Does anyone know what the lettering was made from (4:30 - 5:15)? It looks like a rub-down transfer, but what would they use in 1913?

A short film that reminds us how basic was the outer-suburban service on the East Coast Main Line before electrification. That started in 1972 and was completed to Hitchin and Royston in 1977. There isn't any sign of o h l e being erected at Hitchin in this 1975 film. The dmu service of two-car units (usually as a four-car train) plus Class 31-hauled coaches for the peak-hour commuter traffic was much as it had been in the early 1960s. The arrival of emus, faster journey time and a much better frequency changed everything from 1977.

The Class 442s have been permanently withdrawn by South Western Railway since March 2021 and will be replaced by refurbished Class 458s for the Portsmouth Direct Line and the SWR 442 sets were withdrawn from service in March 2020 at the start of COVID-19 Pandemic and also the SWR 442 sets had a lot of technical problems and also have future problems complying with accessibility regulations from 2024

Great to see this film . The bridge just outside the station is where I used to clamber up to the line and then wander around the station precincts and tracks. It was a really high quality building gone to rack and ruin and the house in its place is a sad imitation of what was there even if the odd bit was retained. It was exciting seeing the occasional goods working and latterly the station used as storage of materials for the mainline electrification, after which the tracks were torn up back to Belmont.

im 43 now, its funny to think, that when this was filmed, i was just 5 mins walk away from this station..living my life as a six year old. My dad also ran the pub that was almost attached to this station. There was 4 platforms at this station, and the station staff would call my dads pub "platform 5". Funny.

On the loco 44863 the shed plate looks like a 1 so it could be 1A 1B 1C 1D 1E or 1F which were all London sheds.

To think that in 1983 Margaret Thatcher's government was seriously thinking of closing the entire North Wales railway network: not only the Conwy Valley branch to Blaenau but everything from Crewe to Holyhead. The fully restored Ffestiniog would have been left isolated.

👍Oh they're so classy and lovely. If i was incharge of them I would get the depots to make as many of them as possible and have them running in Kent, Surrey, Sussex, South West London and Central London for as long as possible. They're the best or one of the best trains in England ever especially when they were the Gatwick Express⭐.

Fantastic video of some Bluebell favourites. Hopefully these locos will be returned to steam before too long. I am currently putting a video together of a couple of Hornby Terriers that I have customised. I usually like to match up accurate archive sounds to video footage of running on my model railway, but I don't have any terriers in my audio collection. I was wondering if you would allow me to use some of the excellent audio in your video to put to a forthcoming video of mine? Here is an example of my most recent video including 73082 Camelot: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l16yaJ6eoMeCZ8k Thanks for reading, I hope this is of interest and to hear from you soon, Steve

02:49 Was this shot taken from Woolgrove Road or Wymondley Road bridge? What looks like a gas holder in the background makes me think the former, although I'm sure there would have already been the houses (now currently to the left, where the train approaches the bridge) built in 1975? Any help on this?
