Once you've listened to more of AIC and gotten even more familiar with Layne's story, I suggest listening to the songs "Your Decision" and "Black Gives Way To Blue" on their first album post-Layne Black Gives Way To Blue from 2009. They tell the tale of Layne's struggles through the lens of years after and through Jerry and the others' views on it. Great reaction man!

Have you ever watched any of the Brass Against The Machine's covers of Tool? Pretty mind-blowing. Lateralus is a standout.

The spirit of metal has reappeared in the eyes of the whole world with GOJIRA at the Olympic Games 2024. Thanks to this french group and to their unique performance which has embellished and revived this music. Their staging will remain anchored in the memory of those who love the metal and in that of the Olympic Games. A big thank you also to FRANCE who had the audacity to have a metal band play for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. (Google Translation)

Something very similar to this message also from Layne is “Wake Up” from his side project Mad Season, a Seattle supergroup with Layne, and members from Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees and other individuals. Definitely worth a listen & check out the lyrics, some of Layne’s best work while he was in rehab…:)

I’m so blessed to have been born and raised in Washington state, 35 mins south from Seattle. Grunge will always be a vital genre to my playlist rotation, no matter which band, but AiC has and will ALWAYS be held dear to my heart. Beating addiction, coping and grieving after my mother’s untimely passing to brain cancer when I was 19…they got my through some dark times. I’ll love this band more than any other band. Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr/Inez, and Shawn Kinney for life 🤘

Layne was in the deepest darkest point of his addiction. Basically a dead man walking here. Band mates were extremely concerned he’d make this appearance. After getting “fixed” offstage, he was well enough to perform. This was basically his death anthem.

He had a traumatic experience at age 11 (his mother's stroke) but it changed him, he's trying to reunite now with his 11-year-old self to make a complete person. Talking to each other from far away. Telling his 11-year-old self to hold up the light so he can find him. "Jimmy" is James's younger self.

This song could and should have as much a cultural and musical impact as Smells like teen spirit. Goodbye insipid bland Coldplay and Ed Sheeran and usher in Gojira and death metal revolution.

This live concert is everyone’s favorite but it’s hard for me to watch because he was in such bad shape and health from his addiction. I lost my only son to alcoholism so though Layne’s stupendous talent here is unquestionable it still breaks my heart that he suffered so, just like my son did in his final years. The lyrics are beautifully sad poetry, he died alone and that is the saddest thing. My son was never alone, so many of us tried so hard to help him and get help for him but he just kept slipping further away and I know he did feel alone in his soul no matter how much he was loved. We just need to be kind, always be kind and not judgmental to those who suffer in this way.

There are a handful of voices that defined early-mid ‘90’s alt/grunge. Layne’s is close to the top of the bunch.
