I let the drinkers soak in water with bleach for 1 week. If you can get the water to circulate it's better. I have also tried the dishwasher but eventually amyway would need some scrubbing.

this episode highlights very nicely how much help a champion lizardman can be to a keen novice,and something else which you touched on was the importance of visiting shows,mainly to see how your birds compare to others on display,well done on a very enlightening episode.

Hi Mick , another great episode, what shows will you be going to this year ?
@olivebranchbirds
@olivebranchbirds Ай бұрын
Hi Danny, I have pencilled in EALCA (East Anglian Lizard canary association) which is a brilliant show for Lizards, also I hope to attend 2x general bird shows local to me, Stamford CBS & Grantham CBS. I have just joined the Southern Lizard canary club so will attend that one, I may also join and attend the LCA show which I believe is in Northamptonshire.

@olivebranchbirds
@olivebranchbirds Ай бұрын
Cheers Eric, originally I would have the quail outside to clear up bits around the aviary floor, but this one hates the outside so I had to sacrifice a double breeder so she gets exercise, I do tend to pop canaries in with her when I'm moving birds around so the cage has a double use.

The birds looking beautiful Mick. Do they get enough from the syringe? I know you said you feed them every couple hours just wondering
@olivebranchbirds
@olivebranchbirds 2 ай бұрын
Hi Sam, cheers for the comment, the chicks get enough vitamins, minerals, protein etc from the mix, as for quantity they tend to let me know when they're getting full, they store a lot of the food in their crop and slowly digest the food over time, it's as important to make sure the crop is empty before the next feed in order the chicks don't store food for too long and incite digestive issues from stale food. It takes longer to wean the hand reared birds, I am currently trying to get them to eat for themselves :)

Hi mick, I see your colour feeding by water even to the ones with chicks in the nest, how long do you colour feed for and what age do you start at please?
@olivebranchbirds
@olivebranchbirds 3 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for the question, I have started adding the red to egg food & water but it's a relatively weak mix (50% ) which I hope will help give them a base colour, I started when I thought some of the chick's were dropping the odd feather and decided to feed it to all chick's at the moment, however when the next set of chick's hatch they won't be colour fed at all, this let's me have more options in competition later in the year.

You probably know this already, but just in case... In the 1980s, more experienced breeders told me to always have some clear nail varnish on hand to close the hole in an egg punctured by the hen's claw. They also said to keep the shells of a couple of hatched eggs/clear eggs to trim and use as a patch stuck on with aforementioned clear nail varnish in the case of slightly larger damage. It's a long shot, but they claimed to have occasional successes.

You must be reading my mind. I was going to ask for a video on how you put those cages together, but you've already gone and done it! What do you think about the wire cage bottoms preventing natural picking and scraping behaviours? I would have added effect on the birds' feet, but those wire bottoms look well rounded and smooth; it's not as if they're made of twiweld or similar.
@olivebranchbirds
@olivebranchbirds 4 ай бұрын
I like the wire bottoms as it keeps the cage cleaner, but it is possible to remove the wire bottom and put the tray higher up if that is a method of preference, thus giving the birds access to the floor, I do this for my quail as it would cruel to have him walking on wire.
