As a Canadian, from Vancouver BC, married to an American, living in Seattle USA … I’m actually quite proud of our transit system back home because compared to many American cities - it’s great to see seamless integration and multimodal transportation as an alternative to the car. I’m also glad that Seattle is finally opening and finishing some much awaited rail transit corridors.

Ah, dear Leila! Does she recall how long it took to build a wheelchair access entrance at Benfleet Railway station? We may not have organised a helicopter, but gave her a helicopter view of the line between Upminster and Southend.

Riders need a tool or app that combines all the available transit modes. Especially if your home or destination is not close to a transit route.

Doesn’t Apple Maps do that? Today I put in my destination (typically a 2.5 hour drive) and selected public transport with desired time of arrival and it showed me the best bus to catch to the best train station to get me there.

I am a huge fan of Metra it’s not even funny. I can tell you so much about the railroad, and every stop on 10 of the 11 lines. My friend and I do some railfanning at different stations. Just recently we were at the Medinah station on the Milwaukee District West Line. Saw lots of Metra of course. Even caught a BNSF manifest

The 1984 Olympics improved circulation flow throughout the city, by creating one way streets where there were not that way before, as well as increased busses just as it is being planned for 2028

Nice information on the elevators, though, public urination could also be due to Los Angeles only having 14 public restrooms.

As a non car driver living in LA for more than 4 decades. It will car free. Just walk 5 mile at train stations. Just wait for infrequent buses. Metrolink is great. Just walk 10 miles if you are lucky. LA public transportation is so terrible because so many out of touch people are making decisions n promotion

a common misconception, if the average user actually used transit (instead of being stuck in cars like a bunch of sheep) then you'd know Metro has knowingly addressed those problems. I am a frequent user and I see metro security, cops, and ambassadors at nearly every station. I see improvements in cleanliness - I actively see metro workers cleaning stations. that said, there are still problems around stations such as Pershing Square and Macarthur Park. The more Los Angeles learns that housing and density follow transit the more communal it will become.

Thats not even true. Mackinac Island in Michigan is actually the first car-free area in the United States, dating back to 1898. The island banned motor vehicles to preserve its natural environment and maintain its unique historic character. Today, transportation on Mackinac Island is primarily by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, making it an early example of a successful car-free area in the U.S.

Please read.... Regular people are strongly OPPOSED to the congestion tax. This is a blatant and unapologetic revenue generation scheme on behalf of the corrupt MTA. The governor cancelled it because she is afraid we will vote Democrats out of office for hitting us in the wallet like this for no reason except the MTA is trying to strongarm us into paying MORE to AVOID using their insufficient and unsafe services. The NYC area had a GDP of 12.2 TRILLION DOLLARS in 2022. Why does the government turn to WORKING CITIZENS for money with their hands open? They should ask the FED to PRINT MORE MONEY - just like they weren't afraid to when they LOCKED US inside our homes for a year. They should instead: 1) ask the federal government for the money 2) find it in the state budget 3) allocate existing funds better 4) ENFORCE FARE COLLECTION!!! The people who support this mostly will not be affected by it at all but they are quick to demonize opponents and characterize us as rich - when in reality we are ALL working people who would also benefit from a more comprehensive, reliable transit service. However it is important to note historical contexts, which inform us that citizens are NOT the people who have ever been asked to finance the subway or its construction. The transit system we have was built using private equity by private companies who charged the public a fare to use the service. this generated a lot of money to run and improve service, especially across competing transit agencies. If the public had been saddled with the costs then, the trains would have never been built. So why is now any different? It's an unfair - and unrealistic ask, to put the costs on one segment of the working population. Did Janno Lieber, and the supporters of this insane plan, skip history lessons? Or are they really just that desperate and hungry to get their hands on our money?
