I started watching your fascinating video because I acquired a 62C from 1969 a few days ago and have spent many hours cleaning it and trying to figure out how to check and clean the brushes and commutator without dismantling everything. It seems inconceivable that Elna would make it that difficult to do something that needs to be done with some regularity. But from watching you dismantle this machine and finally extracting the motor it seems Elna didn't want to even find the motor! Is there a way to access the motor and brushes from behind the back plate where the on/off switch is located? Seems this is where the motor is hidden... Thanks for making this video!

Thanks for your comment. To answer your question about accessing the motor brushes by removing the back plate power interface. Unfortunately No. The Motor Brushes are located on the top and bottom of the motor. The top brush is accessible by removing the blue top cover and the bottom brush is accessible after removing the base plate. The brushes are under a clear soft plastic cover. However, I suspect the brushes can be removed and new brushes installed with the use of a special tool that can reach into and grab hold of the brush spring anchor. I've never seen such a tool. Just to note, even when the motor is removed and on the workbench. It is a tricky task to remove the brush spring anchor without damaging it. Also, when the brushes are worn down the generated particulates sometimes hinder the new brush to slip freely in it's way. I have on a couple occasions have restored machines that at one point have had brushes replaced and the spring anchor was improperly seated which caused uneven wear. I've also come across instances where one of the brushes was stuck also causing the other brush to wear down more. Removing the motor from the machine to replace the brushes it a bit tricky also and after reassembly, re synchronization would be required. So if your local Elna techy can replace your brushes without removing the motor and overcharging you. That is your best option.

I'm completely in awe of this!!! Thank you for doing this video. I have a 62c super magic that I'm trying to restore to it's former glory. But, I have ZERO experience taking machines apart. I'm just super fascinated with doing this and learning how they are put together. You are so confident.

Thanks for your kind comment. It is very satisfying restoring these fine machines so they operate like new again. The design of these Elna Supermatics are genius. The fits and precision of the parts are top quality. I sell these restored on craigslist, I'm located in Elk River, MN. My customers all say they love these Supermatics and have trouble finding good repair servicing.
